“The Legend of the Panther” & “Hannah Frank and John Burke Murders”

Join the Burrillville Historical Society at the Bridgeton School, Thursday, October 29th at 6 p.m. for an exciting presentation titled “The Legend of the Panther”. Hear the weird and bizarre story of a creature called the “panther” that stalked the woods in Burrillville and created fear and anxiety in all those who ventured into the woods. It will also include the story of the Hannah Frank and John Burke Murders in 1832. This presentation was previously given in March 2026 at the Jesse M. Smith Library as part of the Burrillville 250 history lecture series. If you missed it then, you can see it now! Does the panther still roam our woods? Come hear the story to find out!

This is a photo of a unique historic foundation located in the town's industrial park off Broncos Highway in Burrillville. It was probably constructed in the early 1800s or around the time of the Revolutionary War. It is unique in the construction of the cold cellar and also the niches in the wall (there are 2 of them). The town is trying to sell this lot for industrial purposes now. When the lot is sold, I don't know what will happen to this foundation. It is located near wetlands and it was suggested by the state archeologist to include this foundation with the wetlands and not to disturb it. I am going before the Burrillville Town Council on Wednesday, Oct 14th to try to make them understand the significance of this structure and that it's in the best interest of the town to preserve it. Once it's destroyed, you can never get it back. Perhaps one of our revolutionary war ancestors built it? We don't know. It should be studied and preserved for future generations. It's part of the history and legacy of this town.
