A MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHIEF OF POLICE
I want to take a few minutes to set the record straight, because I've had enough of the rumors and misinformation being spread about your Police Department.
The misinformation that is going around is that the Pearl River Police Department doesn't have insurance. That our officers aren't covered, and that if something goes wrong or somebody's constitutional rights are violated, there's no insurance to protect the Town or address those claims.
I'm here to tell you that's false.
Our department has liability insurance coverage for covered claims involving the department and its officers, including certain claims alleging misconduct or violations of constitutional rights. Like any insurance policy, that coverage has terms and limitations.
This insurance policy includes the Special Response Team and all special operations.
We've got an election coming, and all of a sudden, these rumors start flying.
I've served two terms and I am term limited so therefore I am not running for reelection. I don't have a campaign to win, and I don't have a political dog in this fight.
But I'll tell you what I do have. I've got a responsibility to this town, to the people who elected me, and to the hardworking men and women who put on that uniform every day that would take a bullet to protect the citizens of our town. Police work is not an exact science but I can assure you that our officers want to ensure their safety and the safety of the citizens as their first priority.
I am not going to sit quietly while somebody drags this department through the mud with information that simply isn't true.
You want to ask questions? Ask them. You want accountability? So do I. You want to know how your tax dollars are being spent? You have every right to know.
But don't mistake spreading rumors for holding somebody accountable.
This is Pearl River. We're a small town. We know each other. Our officers aren't strangers riding through here. They're our neighbors, our friends, and members of this community and they deserve better than having their reputations dragged into what sure looks like election-season politics.
So here's what I'm going to say, and then I'm going to leave it alone.
If you've got a legitimate concern, bring it to me. If you've got a question, ask me. But if you're going to make accusations, have the facts to back them up.
I'm going to finish my time as your Chief the same way I've tried to serve from the beginning: standing up for this town, standing behind our good officers, and telling the people the truth.
Because when this election is over and the political signs come down, we're all still going to be neighbors here in Pearl River.
God bless y'all, God bless our officers, and God bless the Town of Pearl River.
