Staff Highlight: Mandy
Where Helping Patrons is at the Heart of the Job
For the past 12 years, Mandy has worked as a library clerk with the Adams County Public Library, helping patrons find the resources, information, and materials they need. Her connection to the library began long before she became a library employee. A fun fact that patrons and coworkers may not know is that Mandy was born overseas and moved to the United States. As a child, Mandy loved to read.
“I enjoyed coming to the library as a child,” she said. “It was fun to think I would get to work there!”
Today, one of her favorite parts of the job is interacting with patrons and finding ways to brighten their day. Whether she helps someone locate a book, answers a question, or connects a patron with a library resource, she appreciates the opportunity to make a difference. Each interaction is different, and she enjoys getting to know the people who walk through the library doors and learning how the library can best serve their needs.
One of the most rewarding parts of working with patrons is seeing their excitement when library employees help them find exactly what they are looking for. Those moments, for Mandy, are a reminder of the important role the library plays in the community. A requested book, a helpful resource, or access to technology can sometimes have a much greater impact than expected.
Libraries are extraordinary places that offer many opportunities, but one memorable experience stands out to Mandy. A patron once used the library and its computers to complete her schooling online. Years later, she returned to share the news that she had graduated and was now working in nursing. Experiences like this demonstrate how library resources can become an important part of someone’s journey toward achieving their goals.
While books are an important part of the library, Mandy points out that there is more to working at a library than meets the eye. “We don’t just read books all day,” she said. Library employees spend their days assisting patrons, maintaining collections, helping people use technology, hosting library events, and connecting community members with resources.
Outside of work, Mandy is fond of reading thriller books and ghost stories. One of the books she recently read was My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney. She also enjoys playing computer games and working in her garden, although she jokingly describes herself as trying to “make my garden survive.”
When asked what she enjoys most about being part of the Adams County Public Library team, her answer reflects the heart of public library service: “Being able to help people get access to the resources they need to succeed.”
After 12 years of working at ACPL, Mandy continues to bring that commitment to work each day. Her interactions with patrons, dedication to helping others, and appreciation for the library’s role in the community make her an important part of the Adams County Public Library team.
