COMPACT: a collaborative community initiative designed to address substance misuse and mental health

COMPACT’s goal is to assist families across Shelby County by providing them with up-to-date information and available resources to guide teens back to a substance-free, happy, healthy lifestyle without entering the juvenile justice system. The team is implementing strategies aimed at reducing substance misuse and promoting mental wellness by:
• raising awareness & educating citizens on risk factors;
• identifying at-risk youth and building mentor relationships with students;
• promoting available resources
• implementing new prevention strategies; and
• using community-based law enforcement approaches. COMPACT’s volunteer led prevention teams educate, engage, and empower their local communities. The teams include representatives from different sectors of the community including youth, parents, schools, businesses, media, law enforcement, local government, faith-based organizations, healthcare, and civic organizations. COMPACT’s page serves as a government speech forum intended to communicate information to the public. Use of this platform is not intended to create a public forum, and administrators reserve the right to edit or eliminate comments posted.

COMPACT's Vestavia PD Officer, John Davis, recently participated with Vestavia Hills Schools, Rebel Connect Parent Awareness Night. Connecting with parents in our communities is a vital part of our work. Officer Davis does a phenomenal job reaching youth in Vestavia and we appreciate events like this that allow him to showcase COMPACT's mission to parents in the community.

Is it Red Ribbon Week at your child's school?
Why do we have a Red Ribbon Week?

According to the DEA “RED RIBBON WEEK is Celebrated Annually October 23-31. Red Ribbon Week highlights the importance of living a drug-free life. It presents an opportunity for parents, educators, and communities to reinforce the drug-free messages they share with their children throughout the year. During Red Ribbon Week, youth and adults around the nation pledge to increase their knowledge by learning more about the destructive effects of drug abuse, including prescription drug misuse, and renew their commitment to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.”

In February 1985, a 37 year old DEA Agent was working undercover in Mexico to expose a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline to the USA when he was kidnapped and later killed. Enrique “Kiki” Camarena’s hometown high school in Calexico, CA started wearing red ribbons and pledged to lead drug-free lives in order to honor the sacrifice Kiki made to try keep drugs from coming into the US and their community. Red Ribbon Week gained momentum and is celebrated nation-wide in schools and communities.

COMPACT Officers are busy this time of year giving many presentations on dangerous substances at schools across the communities we serve. We strive to prevent dangerous substance use and abuse through education. Pictured here is one of our COMPACT team members, Investigator John Kyle, giving a presentation to Oak Mountain Middle School.

Earlier this year, four team members moved on to new assignments but we only recently were able to celebrate them. They all have a heart for youth in Shelby County and we were privileged to work alongside these great officers.

Today our Resource Development Coordinator, Leah Lightner, was a guest panelist for the Shelby County Chamber’s - Women’s Business Council’s - first Summit! Panelists shared experiences and offered insight from different perspectives. Then the amazing Lauren Sisler brought the keynote and did not disappoint! Her story of resilience in the face of tragedy along with her courage to move forward was inspiring to all.

Thanks to the Shelby County Chamber for opportunity to share what COMPACT is doing in our community! This event was well planned and it showed!
