Take Off Program A preschool learning outreach program of the Umatilla County Special Library District. When you can read, you can “Take Off!” to anywhere you choose!

The Take Off Program is the early literacy outreach program of the Umatilla County Special Library District. The program serves children from birth to kindergarten by partnering with early childhood educators within Umatilla County. While we hope that every child visits their local library and experiences the programs and everything the library has to offer, we realize not all children get this opportunity. To promote the development of the early literacy skills necessary to successfully begin kindergarten, services are delivered to children where they attend preschool and/or childcare.

It’s getting to be that time! We will have our annual open house on Halloween night. Stop in for a warm place to get treats (not tricks) compliments of our Friends of the Library.

She was my favorite author as soon as I was old enough for chapter books. Was she your favorite ?

📚 Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon, on April 12, 1916, and spent her early childhood on a farm near Yamhill. When she was six, her family moved to Portland, and the city that shaped her childhood became the setting for some of the best loved stories in American children's literature.

🏘️ Klickitat Street is a real Portland street near the neighborhood where she grew up. It became the home of Henry Huggins, Beezus, and Ramona Quimby, characters who felt like real kids because they were drawn from the real world she knew. Her first book, Henry Huggins, was published in 1950.

🏅 She went on to write more than 35 books for young readers, including the Ramona series. In 1984 she won the Newbery Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw. She trained as a librarian, and she wanted every child, including the reluctant reader, to find a book that sounded like their own life.

Beverly Cleary turned a Portland street into a place millions of readers can picture. Which of her books made you feel like she was writing about your own childhood?

I am doing outreach this month to families living in Helix with children under the age of 5 that have not yet signed up for the Imagination Library. There will be information on the Imagination Library along with other resources to help your child become an avid reader in your outreach packet!

Ask any patron about their first library memory and there is a good chance it has to do with preschool storytime. My first library memories are walking to the Umatilla […]

It’s back… 👀

After a year of eerie silence, the pool pass incentive has returned. The toddlers are coming… and they’re about to take over the library. Tiny footsteps. Familiar songs. An alarming number of requests for “one more book.”

Attend 10 story times between now and May 31, and receive a season pool pass to the aquatic center for every member of your immediate family.

🕷️ Thursdays at 10:15 a.m.
🕸️ Saturdays at 11 a.m.

You’ve been warned. Bring your little monsters.

As we finish our "9 to 5" today on 9/25, we honor the legacy of the late Dolly Parton 🦋

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library makes it possible for the Imagination Library of Oregon to provide free books to children from birth to age five. Each month, a new book is mailed directly to the child’s home at no cost to the family.

Families can receive titles in English, bilingual English/Spanish, and select titles in Braille and audio through a collaboration with American Printing House for the Blind (APH) for children (or children with family members) who are blind or low vision.
