Local History Room - Penfield NY The Penfield Local History Room (in the Penfield Library) is part of the Town of Penfield Historian's department. A brief history of Penfield, New York, USA.

This page is dedicated to sharing memories from our community's rich past. Take a moment and share one of your memories in Penfield. In 1795, Daniel Penfield began purchasing land here in Township 13 Range IV and began building mills in 1800 along the falls area of Irondequoit Creek to encourage settlement. Population grew rapidly, and in 1810, this township and the adjoining township to the north, Township 14, were designated by the New York State Legislature as the Town of Penfield. Penfield was the first of the seven east-side towns in the county to be established. By 1814, the census count was 1,874 residents, and it had reached approximately 5,000 people by 1840 when Township 14 was set off as the Town of Webster. The resultant population figure of around 3,000 remained fairly constant for almost a century, until World War II. With the decline of milling in the mid-1800s, the principle industry in our community was agriculture. The Four Corners, where Five Mile Line Road crossed "the road to the mills" (Penfield Road), was the business and residential center of the town, but it did not become an incorporated village. Suburban development escalated sharply during the decades of the 1950s and 1960s, and the population count reached 23,732 in 1970. The present count is estimated at around 36,000, and with burgeoning growth of the nation's economy, suburban communities are once again experiencing rapid growth and development.

This weekend, the Local History Room, in conjunction with Penfield Recreation Department and Lewis Henry Morgan Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Association, ran an dig at the site of the old Alpheus Clark House Barn. If you were out on the south side of Shadow Pines this weekend, you might have seen us. "Excavating History" was a PenRec program that paired participants with trained archaeologists for a hands-on introduction to archaeology. We spent Saturday morning in the classroom before heading out to the site where we dug and sifted, hoping to find artifacts that would reveal the daily lives of people who lived and worked on the Clark property across time - what they did, ate, consumed, used, valued - and the spaces where they spent their time. On Sunday we began the process of cleaning and documenting what we found -- which included nails, ceramics, lots of broken glass, and pieces of metal tools. We will be continuing to process the artifacts on Monday evenings in the Local History Room so if you'd like to learn more about this part of archaeology, come and join us! Big thanks not only to Penfield Recreation and the Morgan Chapter but also to the folks from Penfield's town parks and security who helped us get the site ready and keep it safe.

We've been given a couple of photos of old Penfield school buildings to add to our collection. A new school was built around 1907 on Five Mile Line Road just north of Four Corners to educate all children in the Four Corners area as well as high school students from all over Penfield. The building saw several additions, which still stand today, but this original 1907 building was demolished in the late 1960s.

We rely heavily on donations of photographs to build our collection. If you have any photos of old Penfield buildings, landscapes, or people, we'd love to see them. We're happy to scan photographs and return them if you would like them back.

The image is of Henry Frost, one of four Penfield brothers who fought in the Civil War. Henry enlisted in Company D of the 140th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry. He saw action at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg among others and was wounded and left for dead at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was captured and sent to Andersonville Prison and remained a prisoner until the end of the war. He returned to Penfield, married, and farmed on Plank Road. He died in 1931, aged 89.
