🦇 Why is it important to capture a bat if you wake up with one in your room?

Waking up with a bat in your room could mean you were exposed to rabies—even if you do not see or feel a bite. Safely capture the bat and call Yates County Public Health. We will talk with you about what happened and decide if the bat should be tested. Testing the bat may allow us to rule out rabies and avoid starting rabies post-exposure treatment (RPEP) when it is not needed.

Woke up to a bat? Here’s what to do:
- Put on thick gloves and safely capture the bat using a container with a secure lid.

- Call Yates County Public Health at (315) 536-5160. After business hours, call Yates County Sheriff’s Dispatch at (315) 536-4438.

- Do not release the bat before speaking with Public Health, especially if it may have had contact with a person or pet.
