Quartermasters (QMs) are the Navy’s navigation specialists—using charts, maps, oceanographic data, and navigation systems to guide ships safely at sea and in port. From maintaining navigation equipment to managing visual signaling, they keep the ship on course when precision matters most.

Meet Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 1st Class (PR1) Daniel Vance, a Recruit Division Commander (RDC) at Recruit Training Command (RTC) Great Lakes, the Navy’s only boot camp.

A native of Zion, Illinois, Vance joined the Navy 12 years ago to test himself and build something stable for his family.

“I wanted to challenge myself and see how far I could go,” Vance said. “It was important to me serve, but I also wanted to become the kind of leader people could count on. That’s really what’s kept me here, the chance to develop the Sailors I lead into better people.”
