Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "Peoria speech" outside the Peoria County Courthouse, this day in 1854. Lincoln's 3-hour address was a response to a speech by Sen. Stephen Douglas, the architect of the Kansas-Nebraska Act that overturned the 1820 Missouri Compromise limiting the spread of slavery.

Though perhaps not as famous as the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates, the Peoria speech marked a pivotal moment in Lincoln's career where he made a major legal and moral stand against the expansion of slavery, arguing that it ran against the bedrock principles outlined by the Declaration of Independence.

"Near eighty years ago we began by declaring that all men are created equal; but now from that beginning we have run down to the other declaration, that for SOME men to enslave OTHERS is a 'sacred right of self-government.' These principles can not stand together. They are as opposite as God and mammon; and whoever holds to the one, must despise the other."

John McClarey's "Lincoln Draws the Line" sculpture at the corner of Jefferson and Main outside the Peoria County Courthouse stands as a testament to Lincoln's stand against the expansion of slavery.
