🚨🔋 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026: CHARGE OUTSIDE & STAY SAFE! 🔋🚨

As we highlight fire safety this week, the Perkins Fire Department wants to share a crucial tip about the larger batteries we use every day.

E-bikes, electric scooters, and heavy-duty power tools are incredibly convenient, but they require extra care. Because these items have much larger batteries, they store a significant amount of energy. If one of these batteries fails while charging, a fire can ignite instantly, grow rapidly, and easily trap you if it's indoors.

👉 What you should do:

Always charge larger items outside and well away from any exits, doors, or walkways.

Never charge them inside your home, garage, or in hallways where they could block your escape route.

Use only the charger that came with the device, and unplug it once it's fully charged.

Let's work together to keep our homes and our community safe.

Small actions make a big impact. Share this post with your friends and family to spread the word! ❤️👨‍🚒🚒

Good morning Perkins!

Feels Hot? Stop Using It.

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

Good morning Perkins! đźš’

Have you ever spent way too much time hunting for a device charger—not even your charger, just any charger that fits?

We’ve all been there! While grabbing the cheapest replacement online is tempting, low-quality chargers and bad charging habits are a cause of home electrical fires.

Keep your home and family safe by remembering to C.H.A.R.G.E. smart:

🔌 Cables Matter – Always use the original cable that came with your device, or buy a manufacturer-approved replacement.
🔋 Hard Surfaces Only – Charge devices on a desk, counter, or nightstand. Never charge on a bed, couch, or under a pillow, as trapped heat can easily spark a fire.
📱 Accredited Gear – Avoid cheap, uncertified knockoffs. Look for UL-listed or manufacturer-certified chargers.
⏰ Remove When Ready – Unplug your device once it hits 100%. Don't leave devices plugged in indefinitely.
🔥 Give It Space – Keep charging stations away from flammable items, blankets, and curtains.
⚡ Electrical Safety First – Inspect cords regularly and throw away any that are frayed or damaged.

Good afternoon Perkins!

As our local fuels continue to dry out and go dormant, our wildland fire risk levels are on the rise. We’re sharing this quick guide from the National Weather Service in Norman to help you understand what each risk level means for our area.

How You Can Help Protect Our Community:

* Check the forecast: Always check daily burn bans and weather conditions before planning any outdoor work.

* Avoid open burning: Hold off on outdoor burning during high wind or low humidity days.

* Mind your equipment: Keep trailer chains secured to prevent sparks, and avoid parking hot vehicles on dry grass.

* Report smoke fast: If you see unattended smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.

The more we know, the better we can protect our homes and neighbors together.

Stay alert and stay safe Perkins!

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation changed forever.

On September 11, 2001, 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, 55 military personnel, and thousands of innocent civilians lost their lives. They were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, colleagues, and friends. Among them were brave first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation, embodying the highest standard of service and sacrifice.

As a volunteer fire department, we carry the legacy of those 343 brothers and sisters with us every time the tones drop. Their courage reminds us of the solemn oath we take to protect our community, no matter the cost.

Today, on this milestone 25th anniversary, we pause to honor:
• The lives lost on 9/11 and the families who forever carry their absence.
• The brave first responders and service members who sacrificed everything in the line of duty.
• The responders and survivors who continue to face battle with 9/11-related illnesses.

We ask our community to join us today in taking a moment of silence to reflect, remember, and ensure that we fulfill the promise made twenty-five years ago: Never Forget.

Good morning Perkins!

With the extended heat and drying of wildland fuels, the risk for wildfire increases. Prepare your home and property now to reduce the risk of damage and loss. Proper installation and maintenance of your attic and crawl space vents can reduce the risk of embers entering your home. See the fact sheet for more details.

Be safe Perkins!
