🗳️ Oklahoma Voters: Know Before You Vote!
With Election Day approaching on November 3, 2026, here’s what you need to know about State Question 847.
📌 What would it do?
SQ 847 would lower the limits on how much a property's taxable value can increase each year, beginning in 2027:
🏠 Homes with a homestead exemption: From 3% to 1.75%
🌾 Agricultural property: From 3% to 1.75%
🏢 Other property, including commercial: From 5% to 4%
👵 What about seniors?
The measure would change the current property valuation freeze for qualifying homeowners age 65 and older, with limits on increases based on household income.
🏫 How could this affect our communities?
Property taxes help fund essential local services, including:
Roads and bridges
Sheriff and emergency services
Public schools and CareerTech
Libraries and other county services
💰 What about lost revenue?
The Oklahoma Tax Commission estimates that local governments could lose approximately $45.78 million in revenue in the first year if SQ 847 passes, with potential losses approaching $500 million over 10 years.
Currently, the measure does not include a plan to replace this lost revenue for counties, schools, and other entities that rely on ad valorem (property tax) dollars to fund their services.
🏡 Will this automatically lower property tax bills?
Not necessarily. SQ 847 would limit how quickly taxable property values can increase, but it does not guarantee lower property tax bills.
📣 Before you vote, take time to understand how State Question 847 could affect you, your family, and the services your community depends on.
