On Friday morning, September 25, while patrolling I-95 in Baltimore County, TFC Sawyer observed a vehicle and pedestrian on the shoulder of the highway. As TFC Sawyer approached, he also observed a loose dog on the right shoulder.

TFC Sawyer activated his emergency equipment and safely positioned his patrol vehicle to protect the right lane and shoulder. He then exited his vehicle and safely gained control of the dog, a male chocolate Labrador who appeared to be in good health. The dog was placed safely inside TFC Sawyer’s patrol vehicle.

The individual who had stopped was not the dog’s owner, but had stopped in an effort to assist. TFC Sawyer discovered an Apple AirTag attached to the dog’s collar, allowing him to identify the dog as “Kaido” and obtain contact information for his owner.

TFC Sawyer contacted Kaido’s family, and after his unexpected adventure along I-95, Kaido was safely reunited with his owners.

On June, 3rd, 2026, Cpl. Porter and his K9 partners had the opportunity to visit Conowingo Elementary School for Career Day.

During the visit, Cpl. Porter spoke with students about his role as a Maryland State Trooper, supervisor, and K9 handler. He shared information about the important work performed by K9 teams and gave students a chance to meet his K-9 partners, Bak and Quill.

K9 Bak is a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois certified in narcotics detection, and K9 Quill is a 2-year-old Labrador Retriever certified in explosives detection. Together, they are a tremendous asset to the JFK Highway Barrack, our allied law enforcement partners, and the communities we serve.

We would like to thank Conowingo Elementary School for welcoming Cpl. Porter, K9 Bak, and K9 Quill. We appreciate the opportunity to spend time with your students and share a little about what we do each day to keep our communities safe.
