Looking for a fall weekend excursion? Take a drive through the mountains along Scenic Highway 7 - Arkansas's first scenic byway and one of Mid America's most beautiful drives - especially in autumn!

🍂🚗 If you're looking for a beautiful Arkansas fall drive, put Scenic Highway 7 on your list! (Info 👇)

There's something special about the stretch of Scenic Highway 7 just north of Hollis, where winding mountain roads take you through the Ouachita National Forest with beautiful views around nearly every curve.

And when the fall colors start showing off? 😍🍁

Designated as Arkansas' first state scenic byway in 1993, Highway 7 stretches nearly 300 miles across the state, but you don't have to drive the entire route to experience some of its best scenery!

And you absolutely need to make a stop at Hollis Country Store! 🥪

Perry County: Bringing Our Jobs and Our Economic Future Home

Every morning, thousands of Perry County residents leave the county to go to work. 90% of our workers carry their skills, their talents, and their purchasing power into neighboring communities. They earn their paychecks elsewhere, and all too often, they make their purchases there, too.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2023 workforce analysis, 2,549 Perry County residents worked outside the county, while just 271 both lived and worked here.

That is more than a workforce statistic. It is an economic development challenge — and an opportunity.

When we lack the businesses, jobs, and services our residents need, we lose more than convenience. We lose opportunities for local investment, business growth, and economic activity that could help sustain our communities.

We cannot expect people to shop locally if the goods and services they need are not available locally. We cannot expect our children and grandchildren to build their futures here if good career opportunities are limited. And we cannot grow our local economy without creating more reasons for people to earn, spend, and invest here.

Perry County needs a deliberate strategy to attract new employers, help existing businesses expand, support entrepreneurs, recruit needed retail and services, and turn our natural, cultural, and recreational assets into economic opportunities.

That is why the discussion surrounding Issue 3 matters so much to our economic future. The proposed amendment could give Arkansas communities - like ours - new tools to pursue economic development projects, support investment, and address barriers that prevent businesses from locating or expanding in places like ours.

But the larger question for Perry County is one we must answer regardless of the outcome: What are we doing today to build an economy that gives our residents more opportunities tomorrow?

Our goal should be clear. Create more good jobs. Help local businesses grow. Give entrepreneurs a reason to invest here. Expand the goods and services available to our residents. And make it easier for people to earn a living and build a future close to home.

We may not be able to keep every resident from commuting. But we can work to ensure that fewer people have to leave the county to find opportunity — and that more of the dollars they earn circulate through Perry County businesses and communities.

A stronger Perry County economy begins when we make it possible for more of our people to work here, shop here, invest here, and thrive here.

Better than any other options, Issue 3 gives us the tools to change the status quo. Vote YES for our county and our future.

Issue 3, if passed, would give local governments - our Arkansas towns and counties - the OPTION to create economic development districts to help incentivize development that meets the needs of their communities.

In simple terms, it allows a portion of the NEW tax revenue generated by a development — property tax and/or sales tax — to help make that development a viable project.

Most importantly, Issue 3 uses a BASELINE tax approach. That means the incentive can only come from new growth — the increase in property tax or sales tax created by the development.

Existing tax revenues aren't being taken away.

Schools, counties, cities and other taxing entities should not lose existing revenue. Instead, they may receive a portion of the new revenue created by a successful development to help make that development possible in the first place.

That gives communities another tool to address real needs — while protecting the tax revenues they already have.

Issue 3 provides an opportunity to encourage responsible economic development and address community needs with no reduction in existing tax revenues.

That's a good deal for Perry County.

It's a good deal for Arkansas.
