Early Morning Structure Fire on Knight Avenue

At approximately 1:56 a.m. today, October 16, Petaluma Fire Department crews responded to a residential structure fire in the 2000 block of Knight Avenue.

Firefighters arrived within five minutes and launched an aggressive interior fire attack, successfully containing the fire to the home and preventing it from spreading to neighboring residences.

Thankfully, all occupants had safely evacuated before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported among residents, pets, or emergency personnel.

Four residents were displaced due to extensive fire and smoke damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Petaluma Fire Prevention Bureau.

We would like to thank the Petaluma Police Department, Sonoma County Fire District, Gold Ridge Fire District, Sonoma Valley Fire, and PG&E for their assistance, mutual aid, and support in maintaining emergency coverage throughout the City.

🔥 Fire Safety Reminder: Make sure your home has working smoke alarms and that everyone knows at least two ways out. Practice your escape plan regularly so everyone knows what to do when seconds count.

Our crews are proud to serve this community, day and night.

Congratulations to Gabriel Albor

The Petaluma Fire Department is proud to recognize Gabriel Albor, one of our part-time BLS employees, who has been selected as the recipient of the **Garrett Paiz Memorial Scholarship**.

Gabriel is dedicated to serving others and advancing his career in emergency medical services. Through his work in EMS, his commitment to mentoring future EMTs, and his pursuit of paramedic training, Gabriel exemplifies the spirit of service that makes our profession so special.

The scholarship honors the memory of Garrett Paiz, a water tender operator who tragically lost his life while fighting the 2017 Nuns Fire on Oakville Grade. Garrett’s legacy lives on through this scholarship, which helps aspiring emergency responders pursue their education and careers in public service.

Join us in congratulating Gabriel and honoring Garrett’s legacy.

The seventh annual Garrett Paiz Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser Dinner will be held Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Torches Restaurant in Petaluma. The event supports the scholarship fund and brings the community together to remember Garrett and support the next generation of emergency responders.

Congratulations, Gabriel! We are proud to have you on our team and look forward to seeing you continue to grow in the EMS profession.

Please join us in congratulating Salvador Lopez on successfully completing his final probationary exam with the Petaluma Fire Department!

Sal’s journey with our department is a great example of what career development and opportunity can look like. He started with Petaluma Fire as a part-time EMT, where he demonstrated the work ethic, dedication, and desire to grow that quickly set him apart.

Recognizing his potential, the department sponsored Sal to attend paramedic school. After successfully completing paramedic school, he earned a full-time position with Petaluma Fire as a Firefighter/Paramedic.

Since joining our ranks, Sal has continued to thrive. His success reflects his commitment to the profession, his willingness to learn, and the tremendous effort he has put into developing himself as a firefighter and paramedic. It is also a testament to the many mentors, instructors, officers, and coworkers who have supported him along the way.

Congratulations, Sal! Your journey is exactly the kind of success story we want to see at Petaluma Fire—supporting those willing to work hard, develop their skills, and pursue a career with our organization.

🔥 More Than Just Firefighters

Brush 101 is currently assigned to the Timber Fire in Monterey County, working hard to protect lives, property, and our communities.

But today, the crew showed us that being a firefighter is about more than just fighting fire.

After a tanker drop hit this trailer, the crew took the time to stop and wash it off, helping a property owner clean up and get back to some sense of normalcy.

That’s what we do. We fight fire, but we also help wherever we’re needed. Sometimes that means putting in a hose lay. Sometimes it means protecting a home. And sometimes it means simply stopping to help someone clean up after a fire impact.

Strong work, Brush 101. 👏🚒

Proud of this crew for representing the Petaluma Fire Department and showing what the fire service is really about—service, compassion, and helping others when they need it most.

If you are a resident of the City of Petaluma, you are invited to keep your property fire safe by bringing vegetation for chipping to our all-community drive-thru site at the Fairgrounds! [Español abajo]

To help you reduce the fire-fueling vegetation around your home, the Petaluma Fire Department and Public Works Department will have a chipper and crew available to the entire community at the Fairgrounds’ Gnoss Concourse on August 8 from 10am-2pm.

Here’s how it works: you cut and remove the dangerous fire fuels from around your home and haul it to our drive-thru site at the Petaluma Fairgrounds located at 150 Fairgrounds Drive in Petaluma. Our crews will work with you to chip your vegetation meeting our criteria below, before you exit the concourse onto Payran Street.

Before hauling your vegetation to the Fairgrounds, please note:
- No raked duff, pine needles, grass, or garbage bags.
- No brambles / vines
- No bamboo
- No palms
- Only vegetation is allowed - no other items will be accepted. Absolutely no trash.
- A maximum of 9” diameter rounds can be chipped.

The City is working with a Petaluma non-profit, Petaluma Bounty Farm, to be a recipient of those wood chips for community use- continuing the opportunity for reducing waste and re-using our vegetation in a safe and productive manner!
