Returning home does not always mean leaving the war behind.

Hypervigilance, numbness, anger, isolation, guilt, insomnia, and risk-taking may be signs of invisible wounds carried home from service. Veterans are not expected to heal physical injuries alone. Emotional injuries deserve the same respect and care.

Support the person, not just the uniform.

When someone has experienced trauma, you do not need to have the perfect words.

Stay calm. Listen without judgment. Do not tell them how they should feel or pressure them to recount what happened. Help them feel safe, supported, and free to move at their own pace.

Sometimes listening is the most meaningful first aid we can offer.

We often hear that time heals all wounds. Trauma can be different.

When left unaddressed, its effects may accumulate and intensify, damaging health, relationships, and quality of life. Healing begins when we stop waiting for the pain to disappear and find the courage to face it.

Seeking help is an act of strength.

Trauma does not always announce itself clearly.

It may appear as insomnia, anxiety, exhaustion, chronic pain, irritability, withdrawal, depression, addiction, or difficulty connecting with others. These symptoms are not proof that someone is weak or broken.

They may be signals that an unresolved wound needs care.

Fight, flight, or freeze is not a character flaw. It is the body’s instinctive attempt to keep us alive.

The danger may pass, yet the nervous system can remain on alert. We may continue reacting as though the threat is still present, even when we consciously know we are safe.

Trauma involves the body as well as the mind.

Trauma is not determined only by how dramatic an event appears to others.

It is shaped by whether the event was expected, whether we felt prepared, and how our mind and body responded. An experience that one person moves through may deeply wound another.

Trauma deserves compassion, not comparison.

Physical injuries receive immediate attention. Emotional injuries are often hidden, minimized, or misunderstood.

But an invisible wound is still a wound. Anxiety, sleeplessness, chronic pain, isolation, anger, and difficulty maintaining relationships may all point to trauma that has never been addressed.

What cannot be seen can still be healed.

Trauma does not discriminate. It can touch anyone, at any age, through loss, violence, illness, upheaval, neglect, or experiences that remain invisible to others.

Understanding trauma is the first step toward healing it.

A traumatic event may last only a moment. Its effects can continue for years.

Trauma can change how we see the world, how we relate to others, and how safe we feel inside our own lives. The past may be over, but the body and mind may still be responding to it.

Healing is possible.
