Today, the City of Petersburg was honored to welcome participants in The Ride 2026, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the 1961 Freedom Rides.

Mayor Sam Parham, Councilman W Howard Myers, Councilwoman Annette Smith-Lee, Sheriff Vanessa Crawford, Treasurer Paul Mullin, Griffin Lounge owner Faris Sanabani and many other community members enthusiastically greeted the special guests. The Petersburg High School band added a particularly touching moment to the welcome, playing for the riders and having the opportunity to meet these trailblazers in person.

The riders are retracing the original Freedom Ride route, with one important difference: this time, they are continuing all the way to New Orleans.

At Petersburg’s historic Trailways bus station, original Freedom Riders reflected on the courage and determination of those who challenged segregation and helped advance the Civil Rights Movement.

The visit also included a stop at Pocahontas Island, where the riders were welcomed by Marlo Greene and connected with another important chapter of Petersburg’s rich African American history.

The visit honored the sacrifices of those who fought for civil rights and underscored the importance of preserving their stories for future generations. Petersburg is proud to be part of this commemoration, connecting our shared history with the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice.

Special thanks go to Faris Alsanabani at Griffin Lounge for making this special and historic visit happen!
