🌾🍂 Iowa’s prairies are changing! As temperatures cool and days shorten, prairie plants begin sending energy into their root systems, where it will be stored over the winter. Above ground, flowers and grasses dry out and release their seeds, beginning the next generation of prairie plants. Wind, wildlife, and gravity work together to spread these seeds across the landscape, while birds and other animals rely on them as an important food source.

Collecting native plant seeds helps preserve local plant genetics, restore habitat for pollinators and wildlife, and establish new prairie areas across the state. Collecting seeds help preserve Iowa’s prairie ecosystems for future generations!

Thank you to everyone who attended our seed collecting program last week! 🌾

If you missed out and are interested in collecting some prairie seeds of your own, here are a few tips:

• Look for brown seed heads that easily release their seeds when shaken

• Store collected seeds in a cool, dry place

• Leave plenty of seeds behind -- Never collect all the seeds from a plant or area

Last week our homeschool naturalist program continued with creepy, crawly, critters!

Participants learned about insects, worms, salamanders and snakes through crafts & activities before heading out to discover more little critters

Fall leaf piles are wonderful places to uncover Earth's smallest helpers such as spiders, slugs, and rolypolys 🕷

There's still time to register for this week's programs!

Tomorrow, we have another homeschool naturalist program all about creepy, crawly critters!

Families will discover how these “creepy crawlies” help keep our soil healthy, control pests and balance nature’s food web! Through live animal encounters, activities and (weather permitting) outdoor exploration, kids will learn that even the slimiest critters deserve our respect and curiosity 🐸

Wednesday, we have a native seed collecting opportunity 🌻

Together, we’ll explore the beauty of Iowa’s fall prairie, discuss how plants prepare for winter and discover how collected seeds can be used to restore and expand native habitats in the spring! Participants will gain practical skills in seed identification and collection while learning how prairie plants support pollinators, wildlife and soil health.

Registration for any of these events can be found on mycountyparks.com

Please call 712-295-7985 or email [email protected] with questions!
