Subject: Update on Blissfest Investigation

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office recognizes the public concern that has arisen from the Blissfest incident.

At present, there is no new information to share publicly. However, as Lonn Hartman recovers from his injuries, we ask the community to join us in respecting the family's right to privacy.

We want to reassure the public that this investigation remains active. The Sheriff’s Office continues to speak with the Hartman family, and we are currently awaiting lab results on the submitted evidence.

Silver Alert Celebration

Sheriff Matt Leirstein had the honor and privilege to speak today at the Friendship Center of Emmet County to celebrate the recent signing of the Michigan Silver Alert legislation. This crucial law is a massive step forward in ensuring a safer Michigan for our seniors.

By establishing a dedicated, rapid-response system for missing adults with cognitive conditions, we are equipping our local communities and law enforcement with the essential tools needed to quickly bring our vulnerable loved ones home safely.

Sheriff Leirstein added: “my top priority will always be the safety and well-being of every resident in Emmet County. I am incredibly grateful to all the advocates, community members, and state lawmakers who worked tirelessly to make this alert system a reality.”

Victim Services Unit

When someone is facing a crisis, having the right support can make all the difference. Our Victim Services Unit volunteers work alongside law enforcement to provide compassion, reassurance, and assistance to individuals during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

If you’re someone who wants to make a difference, support others in times of need, and serve your community, we’d love to hear from you.

Qualities needed of a VSU Volunteer?

Volunteering with VSU takes compassion, dependability, and the ability to remain steady when situations are difficult. We’re looking for individuals who demonstrate:

Compassion & Understanding: The ability to offer support, reassurance, and kindness while remaining nonjudgmental.

Composure Under Pressure: The ability to remain calm, focused, and supportive during emotionally difficult or high-stress situations.

Active Listening: The willingness to listen carefully and provide a supportive presence to individuals who may be overwhelmed or in distress.

Confidentiality & Professionalism: A strong commitment to protecting personal information, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and conducting yourself with integrity.

Dependability & Availability: A willingness to serve in an on-call capacity and respond when deputies need additional support for individuals experiencing a crisis.

If you’re ready to be there for someone when they need it most, consider becoming a VSU volunteer.

HOW TO APPLY:

Turn in a completed application to the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, 450 Bay St., Petoskey, MI. The application can be found online under the Victim Services Unit tab on emmetcounty.org. If you are unable to print the online application, paper copies are available at the Sheriff’s Office.

For more information on the application process or questions about the role, please reach out the Director of the VSU, Wendy Kuebler.
