Day 1 of the Cities United Conference in Memphis is in the books!

Our Co-Founder Steven Pickens and Executive Director Dr. Michael Gainer kicked things off yesterday, connecting with leaders from across the country who share a commitment to safer communities.

Day 2 is underway, and we’re looking forward to what’s ahead!

Peace doesn’t happen from a distance. It starts with showing up. 💙
Through Operation Hug the Block, our Peace Patrol is out in the community—connecting with neighbors, building trust, and creating a visible presence where it matters.
Every block matters. Every neighbor matters. And every person who chooses to show up can make a difference.

Ready to show up for your block? Join Peace Patrol.

Lived experience has value.

Some of Our Peace Patrollers just competed Certified Peer Specialist training, strengthening the knowledge and skills they bring to community-based work. The people closest to community often understand things that cannot be learned in a classroom. Pairing that lived experience with professional training strengthens the ability to build trust, recognize when someone may need support, communicate through difficult moments and help people move toward the right resources.

That’s where the community benefits.

More knowledge in the hands of people who already have relationships in the community means more opportunities for someone to be heard, supported and connected before a difficult moment becomes something more.

We’re proud of the men who committed to the process and completed their training. 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽

Coming home? Start here.

Returning home after incarceration can mean figuring out a lot at once. Here are a few places to start:

→ GET YOUR DOCUMENTS IN ORDER.
ID. Social Security card. Birth certificate. Having your documents together can make it easier to move forward with employment, benefits and other services.

→ KNOW WHAT’S ON YOUR RECORD.
Don’t assume. Don’t guess. Find out what’s actually there, then learn what options may apply to your record.

→ DON’T COUNT YOURSELF OUT.
Look for employment, training, education and reentry opportunities you’re eligible for and apply.

Have questions and need a place to start?

DM us and I’ll send you some resources.

Save this post. Send it to somebody coming home.

Sometimes prevention looks like recognizing when a conflict is escalating, knowing when to step away, having someone you can call, or connecting someone to support before a situation goes further.

Violence prevention isn’t just about responding to what happens. It’s about recognizing the warning signs, having the right resources and taking action before a situation escalates.

As of October 3, 2026, 130 homicides had been reported in Philadelphia.

It’s easy to look at a declining number and stop there. But violence prevention asks us to look earlier.

What happens before a shooting? Where can conflict be interrupted? Who already has the trust to reach someone? What opportunities exist before a bad decision becomes permanent?

Prevention means creating opportunities to intervene before violence happens, from conflict mediation and trusted community relationships to connecting people with resources and positive alternatives.

The number matters. So does everything that happens before someone becomes part of it.

What does prevention look like in your community?

Mission Monday

What changes when we stop asking “Who’s going to do something about it?” and start asking “What can I do?”

Our belief is that, community responsibility belongs to all of us.

That can look like checking on a young person. Sharing an opportunity. Supporting a neighbor. Speaking up before a conflict gets worse. Connecting someone to a resource. Or simply deciding that what happens on your block matters to you.

You don’t have to solve everything to take responsibility for something.

What’s one thing you can take responsibility for in your community this week?
