It was a joy to celebrate the grand reopening of Philly House’s ground floor facilities! Across our city, no other shelter is as large, nor has as long a history of service. At Philly House, guests are met with care, dignity, respect, and wrap-around services, as well as a warm meal. Philly House’s busy kitchen serves 3 free meals a day, every day, to anyone who walks through its doors. In this time of protracted hardship, this adds up to 10,000 meals each month.

I was proud to help support these renovations with a $500,000 state grant. The highest honor of my job is championing Philadelphians in visioning the world that we want—and in the hard work of building it. Thank you, Philly House, for all that you do.

City Council supports the PA Universal Healthcare Act!

Thank you so much to my colleagues in council, especially Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and Councilmember At-Large Nina Ahmad, for adding your voices to calls for our state’s general assembly to pass this bill. All of us, regardless of where we live, where we work, or how much money we earn, deserve access to high-quality medical care that we can afford. Our current system leaves families to struggle while healthcare corporations rake in record profits. The fight for universal healthcare in Pennsylvania is one that we can and must win.

Thank you to District 1199C President Dionne Gary and Committee of Interns and Residents member Dr. Spenser Chen for testifying on the importance of this legislation for the workers you represent and the families you care for.

I just signed the Week Without Driving pledge. Starting today through October 8, I’m walking, biking, using transit—and, when none of these are possible, carpooling—to travel around the region for work and with my family. Some 30% of Pennsylvanians don’t drive, whether because of their age, a disability, their income, or another factor. Here in Philly, one in four households doesn’t have a car.

Week Without Driving invites us to reimagine mobility across our country, in rural and urban areas, and everywhere in between.

I challenge my colleagues in the Pennsylvania General Assembly to join me in taking the pledge, taking transit, and taking initiative to craft legislation that ensures our constituents can get where they need to go and back home safely.

A little rain couldn’t dampen our Senior Celebration! This past weekend, my team and I hosted our 5th annual day of good food, good music, good health, and great community, recognizing and celebrating our senior neighbors.

Many thanks to the fantastic community partners who brought resources and information to support our senior neighbors, including Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, who led a fantastic will writing and estate planning workshop, and South Philadelphia Older Adult Center for hosting us in your beautiful community hub.

Senior Celebration is the last Saturday in September every year, and we’re already scheming for 2027!

Congratulations to Comunidad Garces on their state grant for $122,000! These funds will support the program's ongoing work to support and uplift immigrants in Philly, from English language education to workforce development to their popular Community Health Days. Senator Nikil Saval and I were so happy to visit Garces this week and present them with the check for this well-earned award.

My letter to Drexel University and the Board of the Academy of Natural Sciences: we need more time.

The museum is of incalculable value to our region and to international scientific and cultural fields. Philadelphia bears a serious responsibility to do everything we can to preserve it at its current location.

I join experts, advocates, and community members in calling for the museum to remain open through the end of this year—until all potential avenues have been fully exhausted.
