❄️ Winter is coming! Are your home and vehicle ready for freezing temps and snow?
At DLA Troop Support, mission readiness starts with keeping our workforce, warfighters and families safe. Severe winter weather can arrive unexpectedly, bringing sub-freezing temperatures, black ice and power outages. Don't wait until the first blizzard warning to inspect your furnace or check your tire tread.
Take time this week to run through our Winter Prep Checklist:
🏠 Home Winterization Essentials
✅ Protect the Pipes: Insulate exposed water pipes in unheated areas (crawlspaces, basements, garages) and disconnect outdoor garden hoses. Know where your main water shutoff valve is located!
✅ Service Heating Systems: Replace furnace filters, inspect chimney flues, and ensure vents and intakes are free from leaves and debris.
✅ Test Alarms & Detectors: Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms; never run generators or grills indoors or near open windows.
✅ Prep an Emergency Box: Keep flashlights, extra batteries, non-perishable food, water (one gallon per person/pet per day), blankets and a battery-powered weather radio accessible.
🚗 Vehicle Winterization Checklist
⭐ Check Fluids & Battery: Cold weather dramatically cuts battery capacity. Test your battery, inspect antifreeze/coolant levels, and fill up with freeze-resistant windshield washer fluid.
⭐ Inspect Tires & Brakes: Ensure tires have adequate tread depth and maintain proper tire pressure (PSI drops as ambient temperature drops).
⭐ Pack an In-Car Winter Survival Kit:
➡️ Ice scraper and snow brush
➡️ Jumper cables or portable jump pack
➡️ Warm blanket, gloves, and heavy socks
➡️ Flashlight with extra batteries
➡️ Sand, salt, or non-clumping kitty litter (for traction)
➡️ First-aid kit, bottled water, and non-perishable snacks
➡️ Mobile phone charger and backup power bank
⚠️ Stay Informed: Monitor local weather forecasts, adhere to installation/worksite reporting status updates and download the FEMA app or tune into your local NOAA Weather Radio.
Stay warm, stay safe and stay mission-ready!
