To anyone who really thinks a deputy sheriff in Pa only guards the courthouse or serves civil papers needs to educate themselves. Deputies are highly trained, many months spent away from home at an academy that teaches aspects of the law and physical fitness standards and don’t think it’s a one and done in being certified. Every year they have updates that are required by law. Many deputies go beyond that and are specialized in certain areas of policing, K-9 unit, bomb units, advanced DUI training,CERT units, road patrol, community policing, building threat assessment,SRO, highly trained in Protection from Abuse orders, highly trained in fi****ms, highly trained in warrant service ( in my opinion better trained and experienced than any other agency it’s a primary function of a Sheriff’s Office) Deputies take an oath to protect and serve. In all the years I’ve been doing this, (26) I can attest that deputies across pa take their responsibilities seriously, and this article is just a brief insight to the day and life of a deputy sheriff.

Sheriffs already have authority and capability to expand their role in public safety. What’s missing is a clear, consistent legal definition.

From a policy perspective, creating clarity through codification would enhance the ability of our sheriffs to do what they need to do, when they need to do it — thus relieving strain on law enforcement and maximizing their overall impact in the community.

We will continue pushing for greater clarity from the legislature to enable our sheriffs to serve at their full potential.
