September 27th is the Feast Day for Blessed Brother Scubilion. Br. Scubillion joined the Christian Brothers at the age of 25 and, after 10 years of teaching, he made a journey to the French colony of Reunion in the Indian Ocean. There, he spent the next 30 years educating the poor, the marginalized and -particularly- the enslaved. Br. Scubillion would never return home and he died in Reunion in 1867. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1989.

This image is the cover of a small booklet about the life and works of Blessed Br. Scubilion. As you can see, it’s in Italian. This pamphlet was published at the Lasallian Generalate in Rome, most likely in celebration (or in the lead up to) the beatification of Br. Scubilion in 1989.

September 21st is the beginning of this year’s Lasallian Days for Peace. This series, based on the United Nations days for Peace, lasts about a month and calls upon us in the Lasallian world to reflect on ways to bring about peace across the globe.

For the occasion of these Lasallian Days of peace, we are sharing this image of Br. Daniel Burke in front of the White House in 1971. Here, Br. Dan stood alongside other religious leaders in solidarity for an end to the war in Vietnam. In this blurb from La Salle Magazine, you can see a short statement that Br. Burke made to the board of trustees presenting his rationale for doing so.

September 17th is Constitution Day. On this day in 1787, the United States Constitution was officially ratified. That means our Republic, as it is, has endured for 239 years. As the summer of our 250th Anniversary of Independence draws to a close, Constitution Day is a great occasion to reflect on what our nation has been a part of and where it’s going next.

To commemorate the day in a patriotic vein we are showing off this photograph of the American flag being raised over West Catholic High School For Boys (Philadelphia, PA).

On this day, 25 years ago, the 9/11 attacks occurred in NYC, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. It’s chilling to think that it’s been 25 years since this national tragedy occurred. In solemn recognition of this, we share this image from Hudson Catholic. Since the school is located in Jersey City it was often the case that students would pose for photos with the World Trade Center in the background. As is the case in this photograph, taken from the inside cover of the 1997 Hudson Catholic Yearbook. Four years later, the World Trade Center towers would be destroyed as part of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

All these years on, we hold the memories of those who died in our hearts and wish peace to the families of those affected.

This time of year, students are either getting ready to or already have returned to the classroom! We are wishing all members of the Lasallian community a wonderful school year as things kick back into gear. These students at St. John’s College (Washington, DC) are certainly looking ready! This photo, taken from the 1990 St. John’s College Yearbook, shows a trio of St. John’s students on their way to class. Study hard, lads!

Martyrs of the French Revolution

September 2nd is the feast day of the Martyrs of the French Revolution. During the French Revolution of the 1790s, those in Catholic Religious vocations faced fierce persecution by the revolutionary government. As part of this, a number of Christian Brothers were imprisoned and killed.

For today’s Feast Day, we are sharing this print done by Br. Rich Buccina. This work depicts Brothers’ Uldric, Roger and Leon- all of which died during the French Revolution.

It’s Labor Day! Today we recognize and honor all those who work hard to keep things running. This photo from the 1990 St. John’s College Yearbook shows the school’s support staff enjoying a few cold glasses of Coca-Cola following a hard day’s work.

Wishing you a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved holiday as we get into the school year!

As we wind down the month, we figured it’s time for another Frivolous Friday! Today, we are featuring this image from the 1958 “Harvest” booklet, which is associated with Scholasticate for Christian Brothers which had been at one time located at Anselm Hall in Elkins Park, PA. This edition of the booklet was filled with pen drawings depicting Lasallian Brothers in various silly poses and situations.
