CARIE's mission is to promote the well-being, rights, and autonomy of older adults through advocacy, education, and action.

At CARIE we believe that advocacy starts as a partnership between the advocate and the client based on mutual respect and transparency. Within this partnership, our advocates collaborate with clients to understand their concerns and arrive at solutions that support their values and agency. Our individual assistance and advocacy brings us into partnership with thousands of elders and caregivers thr

For nearly 50 years CARIE has advocated on behalf of older adults and administered many programs and services across the city, Commonwealth and country to provide direct assistance to vulnerable older adults and their caregivers. Our work to empower residents of long-term care facilities, address complex questions on aging services and resources through our CARIE LINE, educate consumers about their health insurance options, and advocacy to improve the system to better serve vulnerable older adults, comes at a significant cost.

Recently, a confluence of circumstances including rising costs and reduced government funding along with decreased philanthropic support for organizations serving older adults has made the funding gap too large to overcome.

Thus, it is with deep regret that we announce that CARIE’s last day of service to older adults will be on Wednesday, November 26th. We sincerely thank all those that have supported CARIE over the past almost 50 years and particularly want to thank the staff and volunteers who made an impact to better the lives of older Americans.

SNAP benefits jeopardized by federal government shutdown 10/21/2025

Nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians — including 500,000 Philadelphia residents —won’t receive SNAP benefits in November if the federal government shutdown continues.

In this article, Brian Gralnick, CARIE's Executive Director, discusses the dire effect this will have on food security in the region -- "Consequences will be devastating. Without federal government dollars, ending or even addressing hunger in the region will be as successful as draining the Delaware River using Eagles helmets."

SNAP benefits jeopardized by federal government shutdown Most SNAP households have elderly people, children, or individuals with disabilities.
