Back for an extended run after a sold out performance in 2025, ANVIL OF THE WORLD is an original coming-of-age horror story about industrialization and masculinity in nineteenth century Philadelphia, written and performed by Jeff Joseph Katz and directed by Michael A. Stahler.

Katz reads from the “newly-discovered” letters of Asa Lawler, a young blacksmith’s apprentice living in post-Civil War Elfreth’s Alley. Asa finds himself terrorized by a strange disease — but not his own. And why does he keep finding mysterious pieces of metal under his pillow? In the Gothic tradition of Shirley Jackson and Guillermo del Toro, Katz weaves an eerie tale of men and their machines, accompanied by over eighty original hand-drawn animations.

if you’re looking for something fun to do in Philadelphia, you do not want to miss this event

Join us on Friday, October 2nd at the Elfreth’s Alley Museum from 4:30 to 7:30 for a special First Friday event commemorating the quirky tale of hitchBOT, the friendly hitchhiking robot whose journey came to an infamous end at the top of the Alley eleven years ago.

This year’s evening will feature:

Create your own hitchBOT and other free robot activities;

Free robot stickers, temporary tattoos, and other fun robot gear;

B**r, w**e, and other refreshments, available with suggested donation. B**r provided by Human Robot Brewery.

Learn the story of hitchBOT, plus hear a message from its creators.

The Elfreth’s Alley Museum and garden will be open free of charge. Browse our gift shop and celebrate Philadelphia’s history and one unforgettable robot.

10 AM: Visit the Historic District attractions (open throughout the day)
11 AM: Red, White, & Blue To-Do Pomp & Parade
2 - 5 PM: WXPN Welcomes the Red, White, & Blue Music Series
6 PM: Red, White, & Rose Picnic - NEW!
8 PM: Wawa Welcome America’s Salute to Service with Queen Latifah[a]
10 PM: Independence Illumination Drone Show (viewable from Independence Mall) - JUST ANNOUNCED!
