Philadelphia Energy Authority PEA drives clean energy solutions that decrease bills, increase future-proof jobs, and build what’s next. Energy that moves Philadelphia forward.

In 2010, Council President Darrell Clarke and Mayor Michael Nutter launched the Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) as an independent municipal authority. City Council established the Philadelphia Energy Authority to provide targeted expertise and focus to Philadelphia’s efforts to reduce energy consumption and expense. Under its founding ordinance, PEA is authorized to facilitate and develop energy efficiency and energy generation projects on behalf of the City of Philadelphia. PEA will fulfill its role by

1. Identifying, supporting and facilitating the most cost effective and environmentally-sound opportunities for the City of Philadelphia to reduce energy use and expense;

2. Promoting and assisting the development of alternative sources of energy, benefiting the retention and development of a local workforce which is essential for the economic prosperity of the City; and,

3. Educating Philadelphia’s consumers (including residential, commercial and public sector audiences) regarding choices available in the energy marketplace.

Philly's schools are going solar!

The School District of Philadelphia's Board of Education voted last week to authorize solar photovoltaic installations at six SDP schools:
Andrew Hamilton Elementary School, Horace Furness High School, Mayfair Elementary School, Murrell Dobbins Career & Technical Education High School, Northeast Community Propel Academy, W. B. Saul High School.

Thanks to funding support through the PA Department of Community and Economic Development's Solar for Schools grant program, new arrays are also being installed at Universal Audenried Charter School and Community College of Philadelphia's Center City and Northeast Campus: https://whyy.org/articles/philadelphia-schools-solar-energy-state-grant

PEA provides the School District of Philadelphia with technical feasibility and project development services, assisting the District as they secure grants through the Solar for Schools program and navigate the projects' Guaranteed Energy Savings financing model.

Construction is scheduled to begin on the six District projects in Summer 2027.

🛠️ September is Workforce Development Month! Join us in celebrating the participants and training partners building bridges to Philadelphia’s clean energy future.

We recently wrapped up GRIT Cohort 8, bringing the total graduates from our Green Residential Construction Immersive Training program to 135 since 2021. 🎓

This latest cohort of 18 graduates completed:
🔨 120+ hours of classroom and lab training
🏠 200+ hours of hands-on experience constructing and retrofitting residential homes
📜 Five industry credentials: OSHA-10, BPI ALCI, EPA Lead RRP, NCCER Core Level 1, and OSHA 30
💼 Nearly 40 hours of work readiness training focused on building confidence, strengthening digital skills, developing resumes, and preparing for interviews

All of this is made possible because of a strong network of instructors, training partners, and career support organizations working alongside the PEA team.

Many thanks to our partners at PhilaPOSH, Energy Coordinating Agency, and PVTC, and our wrap-around service and career readiness partners at EDSI, Touch Management, and Culture of Respect.
