Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children of Philadelphia trains and supports volunteers to advance the welfare of children in foster care through effective advocacy. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is a national association in the United States that supports and promotes court-appointed advocates for abused or neglected children in order to provide children with a safe and healthy environment in permanent homes. CASA volunteers are not lawyers; they are caring citizens appointed by a Family Court judge to represent the best interests of children in foster care. With the personal attention and care of a CASA volunteer advocate, foster children's needs are met and a brighter future begins.

CASA is pleased to welcome Brendan Nyreen, Senior Investment Product Manager at Vanguard, as our newest member of the board of directors. Brendan leads teams responsible for investment products and portfolio construction capabilities supporting financial advisors and clients. He relocated to Philadelphia two years ago and was eager to become more involved in the local community through meaningful service.

Brendan was drawn to CASA's mission because of the critical role advocates play in supporting children in the foster care system. He is particularly passionate about helping ensure every child has a consistent voice championing their best interests.
As a member of the Board and Finance Committee, he hopes to leverage his background in strategy, investment management, governance, and financial oversight to help strengthen CASA Philadelphia's long-term impact and sustainability.

Every CASA volunteer goes through a lot of preparation before they ever step into a courtroom, from screening and orientation to steady guidance along the way.

Donations are what make that groundwork possible. Just one CASA supervisor can support 30 trained volunteers, who together handle more than 75 children's cases each year.

Featuring experts from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Fostering Health Program and PolicyLab, this conversation will center professional expertise alongside lived-experience perspectives.

We welcome people from every culture, profession, and walk of life. While those drawn to education may find the Educational Decision-Maker role especially rewarding, we believe that there is space for CASA in everyone's journey.

So much about a child's life gets decided in a hearing, but from the bench, only part of the story is visible.

A CASA volunteer helps fill in the rest of the narrative. Known as the eyes and ears for the court, they review health and education records, talk with the key people in a young person's world, and hand the judge a fuller, clearer picture, one grounded in who that kid really is.
