Yesterday, I joined the leaders of AFL-CIO to update them on Bill No. 250849, my bill that guarantees residents access to reasonable accommodations for symptoms of menstruation, perimenopause, and menopause, and that protects employees from discrimination when seeking these accommodations.

I am grateful for being given the opportunity to share and thankful to the union for your thoughtful conversation and feedback. I am looking forward to continuing this conversation, so we can make sure that you are well prepared to support your members. I hope you continue to see me and my team as a resource.

And speaking of team, I’d like to shout out my Policy Advisor Nakaja Weaver for a job well done presenting this critical information. I can’t do anything without my team and I am so proud of them and all their work!

*UPDATED HEARING DATE*

The hearing to address the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences’ public museum is now scheduled for October 26, 2016 from 2-5 pm.

To the advocates who have traveled here from out of town for the original date, thank you for your dedication, and please still consider submitting written or video testimony.

My thanks to the organizers and residents of Philadelphia for keeping the pressure going and I hope to see many of you at the October 26 hearing.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Today, I was informed by the Chair of the Legislative Oversight Committee that the hearing to address the historic loss of the Academy of Natural Sciences’ public museum and to seek solutions to reopen it is canceled.

At this moment, I have no further information about if or when the hearing will be rescheduled. I will share more details with you the moment I have an updated hearing date.

I am disappointed by this cancellation but the fight to save the Academy of Natural Sciences’ museum will continue. Residents, scientists, teachers, and families were preparing to come to City Hall this week to be heard. Drexel’s leadership had been invited to answer their questions in public. Those answers are still unanswered, and the people of this city still deserve them.

A cancellation is not the end of this fight. My office is already pursuing other ways to get answers and keep this issue front and center.

To everyone who has organized, called, and shown up for the Academy: thank you. Your voices matter. I stand with you, and I am not going anywhere.

In about an hour, Councilmember Councilmember At-Large Nina Ahmad Community Hero PA Nicole Keels-McGruder on The Her Health Matters Show for a conversation that needs to be shared far and wide:

"Women's Health Is a City Issue: Dr. Nina Ahmad on Work, Policy, and Philadelphia"

Dr. Ahmad is a scientist turned public servant. She knows how decisions made in City Hall show up in our bodies, our paychecks, and our families. We talk about what it takes to build a city where women don't have to choose between their health and their livelihood.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Another week in the books, and an even busier one coming. This week, I stood in solidarity with victims of domestic violence, celebrated Filipino American History Month, and even went to Harrisburg to support legislators addressing challenges related to menopause.

This coming week, on October 7th, the Legislative Oversight Committee is holding a hearing to put Drexel’s decision to shut down the Academy of Natural Sciences’ public museum on the public record and to explore how we can get it open again.

If you are interested in submitting written or video testimony, please email [email protected]. I hope to see you there!

As I reflect upon the reopening of the Cornell 7 case, as well as ongoing local instances of sexual violence - including the investigation of Raymond Horsch, and a mostly ignored case of sexual assault at a massage parlor on 9th and Callowhill - I am reminded of just how much work we still need to do to put an end to r**e culture in our communities.

What ties all these instances together is a system that enables and normalizes r**e and that further victimizes survivors with bureaucratic red tape and negligence.

I am horrified to see that in 2026 we still doubt survivors. That we retraumatize and continue to harm those who need us most. That we let rapists off with a slap on the wrist or a college writing assignment should be a public point of shame.

We need to reflect on what kind of message we are sending when we trivialize sexual violence and allow sexual predators to live whole lives next door to our children.

Philadelphia has seen a heartening decrease in gun violence homicides citywide and I commend our law enforcement and community organizations for the work you have done on that front.

Yet, we have seen significantly smaller decreases in r**e cases in Philadelphia. It is critical that we put the same effort into stopping sexual violence as any other form of violence in our city.

Today I am saddened, but tomorrow I will return to fighting. We cannot rest until sexual violence is a thing of the past.

It’s Filipino American History Month in Philadelphia and this week I had the pleasure of kicking off the month with the Filipino American Association of Philadelphia, Inc. at Baby’s Kusina + Market!

Filipino Americans have a long history in the United States and Philadelphia and their contributions to our city and its culture can be felt in our food, music, art, and so much more.

Thank you to Filipino American Association of Philadelphia, Inc for inviting me and shout out to Baby’s Kusina + Market for the incredible food! Definitely a restaurant Philadelphians need to check out!

It’s official!

On October 7 from 2-5 pm, the Legislative Oversight Committee will hold a hearing to examine, on the public record, how Drexel arrived at their shameful decision to shut down the Academy of Natural Sciences’ public museum.

We will hear public testimony from members of Drexel’s leadership, experts in the field of museums and public spaces, and concerned advocates.

And your voice matters too! We can still save the Academy and we need you to continue to lift up your voices!

If you or someone you know would like to submit written or video testimony, contact Grace Savage at [email protected] to learn more.

And if you aren’t able to attend, you can watch the hearing online at phlcouncil.com/watch-city-council/.

See you next week!
