Community School Student Partnerships (CSSP) To enrich the educational and cultural experiences of children in West Philadelphia public schools

Community School Student Partnerships is a student organization that provides academic and cultural enrichment to children and families in the West and Southwest Philadelphia communities. As part of Penn’s overall university-assisted community network through the Netter Center for Community Partnerships, CSSP operates recess, school day, after school and evening programs across six public schools in West Philadelphia by recruiting, training, and coordinating over 400 Penn student tutors/mentors. In addition, CSSP coordinators mobilize various student groups and organizations who are interested in doing service in schools. After-School: These programs exist to tutor and provide extracurricular enrichment. High School: These programs exist to provide enrichment and mentoring that focus on the goals of high school graduation, college access and vocational success. Penn Reading Initiative: This literacy program, developed by the University of Pennsylvania Linguistics department, aims to improve reading skills through focused tutoring. Lunch and Recess Initiative: This program puts mentors into schools midday in order to promote healthy eating and positive play. School Day: This program matches mentors with specific classrooms for teaching assistantship, small group instruction or one-on-one tutoring.
