On this Father’s Day weekend, I had the honor of joining the Brickyard community to officially dedicate Herbert Drum” Burch Way.

This street renaming is about more than a sign. It is about honoring a man whose life embodied service, loyalty, leadership, and love for his community.

Uncle Drum was the kind of man every neighborhood needs. He showed up. He looked out for others. He mentored young people. He stood by his neighbors. He believed in Brickyard and worked every day to make it stronger.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, I cannot help but think about the example he set. Far too often, we overlook the positive contributions of Black men in our communities. Men who raise families, mentor children, care for elders, protect their neighborhoods, and quietly carry entire communities on their backs.

Uncle Drum was one of those men.

He was a proud member of the 7Gs and a respected leader whose impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.

Today, his name is permanently etched into the neighborhood he loved. Tomorrow, his legacy will continue through the people he inspired.

To the Burch family, the 7Gs, and the entire Brickyard community, thank you for allowing me to share in this special moment.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers, grandfathers, mentors, and positive male role models throughout the 8th District, and beyond. May we continue to honor and uplift the men who help hold our families and communities together.

Congratulations to the family of Herbert “Drum” Burch. His legacy lives on.

On days like this we must remember that African Americans had to, and will have to continue to fight, struggle, and force our way into the true meaning of freedom. As my ancestors did… I, too, have faith. 🔴⚫️🟢

One thing that my mother always told me was that action speaks louder than words. Some talk loud, but when the time is needed for them to show up, they are no where to be found. I am, and will always stand by my community. I know, and see what’s going on, and if I don’t stand for what is right, then I will only fall victim to what is wrong. So, I will say to you, what my other always said to me… “Never let them outwork you💪🏿”

There is no doubt that the citizens of Philadelphia that I know, that I grew up with, and who I represent are truly frustrated with the day to day realities of this city. While some are overly concerned with issues that only benefit them and their lifestyles, others in this city are fighting for just an opportunity to be respected, and supported in a city that they were born and raised in. This is why my office will continue to support the people of the 8th district who we know can use our support. Some want to take what they see as theirs while others want to play a role in making this a great city for every resident who lives within it.

Too often, people talk about what young Black men are up against.

We’d rather invest in them & what they’re capable of.

This summer, seven young men from our community will be working in my office, gaining hands-on experience in community outreach, neighborhood cleanups, constituent services, event planning, civic engagement, and public service.

They’ll be knocking on doors, helping residents access resources, supporting community events, learning how local government works, and making a real difference in the neighborhoods they call home.

When we invest in our young people, we invest in the future of our communities.

These young men are not just summer interns. They are future leaders, entrepreneurs, public servants, business owners, fathers, and changemakers. They deserve opportunities to learn, grow, and see pathways to success that extend far beyond the challenges they may face.

The 8th District is proud to support the next generation of leadership.

Please help us welcome our Summer 2026 Intern Cohort.
