The Wissahickon Environmental Center is part of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. It is located at the northern end of the Wissahickon Valley Park.

Our Carolina Wren's returned to their nest this year! There are four eggs in this nest, and the parents lined it with some snake shed. Take a peek next time you're at the Tree House.

Here are a few photos from our geology walk today. We visited "Sarah's Rock" a formation named after Sarah West who documented and taught about the geology of the Wissahickon to the public for many years. Note the incredible twists within this formation caused by heat and pressure when this rock was buried far below the surface about 400 million years ago. This is metamorphic rock and the layers you see are schist and pegmatite (the white stone). Pegmatite is an igneous rock that intruded into the metamorphic rock. It has very large crystals formed by the slow cooling of magma underground.
Within the metamorphic rock of the Wissahickon, you find various interesting minerals, including garnets, tourmaline, and staurolite.
