💙💛 WHY PUBLIC ED WEDNESDAY | WV IMPACT COACH KELLY SMALLEY 💛💙

✨ Why do you love West Virginia Public Education?

“I believe in the promise of West Virginia's public schools because I believe in our children and families, our communities, and our future.”

This week, we are proud to feature WV IMPACT Coach Kelly Smalley and her passion for public education!

Kelly believes that providing a free education to every child in West Virginia is a foundational commitment to everyone who calls our state home. Although she wasn't raised in West Virginia, she grew up in a rural community much like Barbour County. School was a safe space where she could grow, flourish, and build the foundation that helped her become the teacher she is today.

❤️ Now, she wants that same opportunity for every child in West Virginia.

Kelly believes that every student, regardless of their background, deserves a safe place to learn, opportunities to grow, and a fair chance to build a bright future. Supporting public education means standing behind our students, believing in their potential, and investing in the future of our communities and our state.

We are thankful for Kelly Smalley's dedication to education and for her commitment to helping West Virginia's students and teachers succeed. Public education opens doors, strengthens communities, and gives every child the opportunity to discover what is possible.

Because when we believe in our children, we believe in West Virginia's future! ❤️

👏 Thank you, Kelly, for sharing why you believe in the promise of West Virginia Public Schools!

Something that doesn’t get said enough: the people running your school cafeteria are pulling off a daily balancing act.

Before the first bell rings, our cafeteria team has already been planning menus, prepping food, and making sure every student in line gets a meal that’s good for them and good to eat.

National School Lunch Week gave us a reason to say thank you a little louder, but we’re grateful for this team all year. If your child has had a great lunch this year, drop a comment for our cafeteria team; we will make sure they see it.

❤️🖤💚 WHY PUBLIC ED WEDNESDAY ❤️🖤💚

“I Choose Public Education Because I Believe in the Power of ‘All.’”

Every day, I have the privilege of walking into our schools as an instructional coach, and every day, I am reminded of why I believe so deeply in public education.

Public schools are the heart of our communities. They are places of profound possibility, where the door is open to every single child, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances.

What I love most about public education is its radical inclusivity. It is a promise we make to the future: that every student deserves a high-quality education, a safe place to learn, and a community that believes in them.

In our hallways, we see the true fabric of our world—diverse minds, unique talents, and varied life experiences coming together to learn and grow.

As an instructional coach, I get a front-row seat to the magic that happens when passion meets practice. I see dedicated teachers pouring their hearts into creative lesson plans, collaborating with colleagues, and continually adjusting their strategies to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed.

I see students who walk into a classroom unsure of themselves and leave with greater confidence in what they can accomplish.

Public education isn't just about teaching curriculum; it is about fostering empathy, building resilience, and nurturing the next generation of citizens, thinkers, and leaders.

It is an honor to stand alongside our educators, supporting their growth so they can continue to unlock the potential in every student.

I choose public education because I believe in the power of “all.”

When we invest in public schools, we invest in our students, our communities, and a brighter future for everyone.

With pride and gratitude,

Nina Norris

🍎 Bringing Leaders Together for the Future of Child Nutrition in West Virginia! 🍎

Today, Chris Derico, Child Nutrition Director for Barbour County Schools, was joined by his colleague Travis Austin from Cabell County Schools to help facilitate a roundtable discussion with West Virginia Senate members Bill Hamilton and Ben Queen.

The conversation focused on the current state of child nutrition programs throughout West Virginia and the opportunities and challenges facing school nutrition programs across our state.

The group welcomed representatives from the West Virginia Department of Education, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, local boards of education, food suppliers, and the food manufacturing industry to share perspectives and discuss the future of school nutrition.

🤝 Industry Partners:
• Russ Bailey — Multitude Foods, Inc.
• Chris Yura — WV Harvest
• Lincoln Yee — Co-President, International Food Solutions
• Justin Wilson — Gordon Food Service

🌾 West Virginia Department of Agriculture:
• Amie Minor-Richard — Deputy Commissioner
• Lora Hammack — Food Distribution Program
• Jason Parsons - Foods Distribution Program

🎓 West Virginia Department of Education:
• Amanda Harrison — Assistant Superintendent for Federal Programs
• Melinda Francis — Coordinator, Office of Child Nutrition

🏫 Local Board of Education Members:
• President, Kristy Stalnaker
• Mary Poling

The discussion focused on the current landscape of West Virginia's Child Nutrition Programs, the importance of strengthening Farm to School initiatives, and opportunities to connect our schools with West Virginia-grown and locally sourced products. Supporting our local agricultural community while providing nutritious, high-quality meals to students is a win-win for our schools, our farmers, and our state!

The group also discussed significant challenges facing school nutrition programs, including competitive staff wages, recruitment, and employee retention. Behind every meal served is a dedicated team of school nutrition professionals, and investing in these employees is essential to the long-term success of our programs.

👏 Thank you to Senators Hamilton and Queen, Travis Austin, our local board of education members, our partners at the West Virginia Department of Education and Department of Agriculture, and our industry representatives for participating in these important conversations.

Collaboration among policymakers, state agencies, manufacturers, vendors, local school leaders, and school nutrition professionals is critical to building stronger programs, supporting West Virginia businesses and agriculture, and ensuring our students continue to receive nutritious, high-quality meals every school day.

Together, we can continue working toward a stronger future for Child Nutrition in West Virginia! 💙💛🍎
