📢BUSTED!

It’s Banned Books Week, and we have a confession to make! 😏

🧙‍♀️ Library Director Becky was caught reading The Witches by Roald Dahl! This beloved children’s classic has been challenged for its frightening themes, depictions of witches and the occult, and concerns that its portrayal of women could promote misogyny. Apparently, even witches can stir up a little controversy!

💡 Children’s Librarian Linda was caught reading A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein. This collection of silly poems and illustrations has faced challenges for allegedly encouraging disobedience, disrespecting authority, and including poems considered disturbing or inappropriate for children. Who knew a little poetry could cause so much trouble?

😂 Around here, we believe books are meant to spark imagination, curiosity, conversation, and maybe even a little mischief!

📖 This Banned Books Week, we're celebrating the freedom to read! Stop by Phillips Public Library, check out something controversial, and decide for yourself. After all, the best way to judge a book is to READ IT!

🚨📚 CAUGHT READING A BANNED BOOK! 📚🚨

Well, well, well… looks like our librarian Susan has been caught with The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein!

Wait a minute… THE GIVING TREE?!

This beloved children’s classic has faced challenges over concerns about sexism, gender bias, and unhealthy relationships. Critics argue that the tree’s endless self-sacrifice for the boy can be interpreted as promoting a one-sided relationship, while others see the story as a lesson in love and generosity. The Giving Tree has been banned or challenged in select libraries and schools-such as in Boulder, Colorado (1988) and Omaha, Nebraska (2007)

🤔 So, is it a story about unconditional love or a cautionary tale about taking too much? We’ll let you decide!

This , we’re celebrating the freedom to read, think critically, and form our own opinions—even when a book makes us uncomfortable.

📚 Stop by Phillips Public Library and discover a book that makes you think!

These books are now part of our library's collection, where they can be discovered and enjoyed by readers for years to come.
We extend our heartfelt thanks for this thoughtful and lasting tribute to Owen. ❤️📖
