On October 13th at the Phillips County Farmers Market, the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office, along with Phillips County Emergency Management, Phillips County EMS, the Phillipsburg Fire Department, and other community sponsors, will be hosting a Bicycle Rodeo focused on bicycle safety.

Several stations will be available throughout the event:

• Helmet Station – We encourage children to bring their own helmet if they have one. If not, Emergency Management has acquired additional helmets through a grant. We will also help make sure helmets are properly fitted.

• Bicycle Safety Check – Basic equipment checks will be done, including brakes, handlebars, and other important safety items.

• First Aid Station – Basic first-aid information will be available, along with some possible giveaways.

• Bicycle Obstacle Course – Riders will have the opportunity to work through a course designed to practice safe riding, stopping, turning, signaling, and bicycle control.

We will also have prizes, and bicycles available for children who may not have one to use during the event.

We hope everyone can come out, participate in the Bicycle Rodeo, and enjoy the final Phillips County Farmers Market of the year.

The coordinated search related to this morning’s crash has concluded, the vehicle was identified as a Toyota Sienna and the assisting agencies have been released from the search.

Six adults and one juvenile were located and transported for medical care. An additional individual was released into the custody of a federal agency.

We have received varying reports regarding the total number of occupants in the vehicle, ranging from approximately eight to twelve people. Because of those conflicting reports, we cannot say with certainty that every individual who may have been in the vehicle has been located.

Responders searched an approximately four-square-mile area using personnel, drones, side-by-sides, and four-wheelers, and no additional individuals were located.

At this time, we do not have information indicating an immediate danger to the public. We do ask residents to remain aware of their surroundings and report any unusual or suspicious activity to the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s cooperation, patience, and vigilance throughout the day, as well as the assistance provided by all responding agencies.

One year ago, our community experienced a tragic event that shook us all. Undersheriff Brandon Gaede responded to a Criminal Explosives call to make a lawful arrest and was killed in the line of duty. Fatally wounded, Brandon Gaede continued to do the job to protect the community he had sworn to serve.

One of the most humbling parts of that tragedy was how much our community and the surrounding areas felt our pain and grieved with us. We received support from law enforcement agencies across the state, who helped us as we recovered from the shock of what had happened. We worked with our local representatives to honor Brandon's legacy as The Undersheriff Brandon Gaede Memorial Highway bill was drawn up, testified to, and eventually signed into law. This Bill dedicated a portion of U.S. Highway U36 to Undersheriff Brandon Gaede.

A Law Enforcement Memorial was designed, constructed, and dedicated as a lasting tribute to those who gave their lives in service to Phillips County, ensuring future generations will know their names and sacrifices.

The Phillips County Deputies and Dispatchers never wavered in their dedication to protecting and serving and they never will. Deputies continue to respond to calls with courage, professionalism and commitment. Dispatchers remain committed to be the professional and listening ear that helps you get assistance on your worst day. We continue to thank our community for its support and everyone who helped the Gaede family and supported our office. One year later, we honor and remember Undersheriff Brandon Gaede and continue his dedication through service towards our community.

Brandon was a husband, father, friend and valued member of Phillips County Sheriff’s Office. His dedication, sacrifice and service will never be forgotten.

Starting tomorrow, 02/23/2026, through 03/06/2026, the Phillips County Sheriff's Office will be participating in a special seatbelt enforcement program hosted by the Kansas Department of Transportation and SAFE (Seatbelts Are For Everyone).

This 2 week program's focus will be on teen drivers and their passengers. What does this mean? Deputies will be increasing their patrols in the areas around our high schools immediately before and after school. Of course the primary purpose of this program is educating and ensuring the proper use of seatbelts, but, we will also be placing an emphasis on overall safer driving in general.

Our goal with the office's participation in this special enforcement is to bring a proactive approach towards establishing safe driving habits with the younger drivers in our communities. We want nothing more than to see them, and their passengers, safely reach their destination every time they get behind the wheel!
