🔥 Fire Safety Reminder – Phillips County

The Kansas State Fire Danger Forecast currently places Phillips County at HIGH fire danger. While no burn ban is currently in effect, we are strongly recommending that residents avoid outdoor burning at this time. Winds are expected to reach up to 25 mph, which can quickly cause a small fire to escape control and spread across dry vegetation.

Conditions can change quickly. If burning is unavoidable, carefully consider wind, fuel moisture, and weather conditions before starting—and never leave a fire unattended. When conditions are HIGH, the safest fire is the one you don't start.

Drought Conditions & Fire Risk:

Phillips County is currently experiencing Abnormally Dry (D0) conditions, indicating an area that may be transitioning into drought. Drought conditions are expected to potentially develop over the coming month, increasing concern as soil and vegetation moisture continue to decline.

While D0 is not yet classified as drought (D1–D4), continued dryness can cause grasses, crops, brush, and other fine fuels to become increasingly receptive to ignition and fire spread.

For Phillips County, this means fire potential may increase if dry conditions persist, particularly during periods of warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Continued monitoring of drought, fuel moisture, precipitation, and weather conditions will be important this September.

Phillips County is NOT currently under a burn ban.

However, conditions are being monitored closely. Based on the data, Relative Humidity levels this week are to remain over 25%. However, wind gusts may still be an issue (especially on Wednesday).

IMPORTANT BURNING REMINDER

A burn ban does not have to be in effect for burning conditions to be unsafe or prohibited. Burning is not permitted when wind gusts are 15 mph or greater, relative humidity is 25% or lower, or conditions are hot and dry.

This guidance is in accordance with Phillips County Resolution 2025-6. Please verify current weather conditions before initiating any burn.
