Your friendly, neighborhood HKV team had the honor of participating in the Greenbelt Training Prescription Burn alongside our partners at Oregon Department of Forestry and Philomath Fire & Rescue today.

It was a wonderful opportunity to practice environmental stewardship the way that Native Americans have been doing for thousands of years. This particular burn also helped create protective margins around some very important butterfly habitat.

Fire regenerates the soil and clears overgrown and invasive brush. Setting small, intentional fires can help prevent larger, out-of-control wildfires by providing "breaks" in the landscape that are devoid of fuels, which fire needs to grow. But please, do not attempt this at home without a trained team and the proper permits. ;)

Using the drip torches and ending the day with some giant burritos were some other serious highlights.

It’s that time of the year again when the kids are either skipping back excited to see their friends again or dragging their feet to class wishing summer was just a few weeks longer….

Help our kiddos stay safe by doing your part!

Phew well that was a doozy… your HKV volunteers had a busy few days with that lighting storm starting multiple fires in the hills. But luckily for you, we have a dedicated team willing to put in the work to keep them from spreading further.

We’re grateful for the support of our community and for the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office Wildfire Staffing Grant which allows us to pay our volunteers during fire season.

Team work makes the dream work, and these guys were ready to respond with a quickness! 🙌

Thankful to have big news stay small, and partnerships that make small changes make a big impact.

Regional Response Stops Grass Fire

Today, just before 3 p.m., Polk County Fire District No. 1 responded to a high-risk grass fire near South Kings Valley Highway and Fir Grove Road in Monmouth.

The fire was determined to have been caused by a mechanical failure on a combine. Thanks to a rapid response from firefighters, the fire was contained to approximately one acre, and no equipment was lost.

Polk Fire was assisted by the Oregon Department of Forestry, Southwest Polk Rural Fire Protection District, Hoskins-Kings Valley Rural Fire Protection District, and the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

This incident is a great example of the impact of the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Wildfire Seasonal Staffing Grant. Both Southwest Polk RFPD and Hoskins-Kings Valley RFPD have firefighters on duty through the grant, allowing them to respond as regional resources beyond their normal service areas. Their quick response played an important role in keeping this fire small, and we appreciate their continued partnership as we work together to protect our communities this wildfire season.

Spent fireworks should always be soaked in water. Dispose of fireworks properly and never relight a dud.

As a reminder our agency doesn't have the legal authority to put firework restrictions or bans in place. That happens at the local and community level.
