My MIL wouldn’t hold my newborn for 3 weeks — then she leaned over and said, "Either you tell my son your secret, or I will."
I used to tell everyone I'd won the mother-in-law lottery.
Linda welcomed me into the family from the beginning and even gave Daniel and me an incredibly generous wedding gift.
We got along really well, although there was one thing we never agreed on.
I've always been social, and some of my closest friends were men I'd known since college.
Linda was much more traditional and believed that once a woman got married, her husband and family should come first.
"You'll understand when you have children," she'd tell me.
I usually laughed it off. It was probably the only thing we ever really disagreed about.
When I got pregnant, Linda was thrilled.
She called constantly to ask how I was feeling, bought things for the baby, and couldn't stop talking about becoming a grandmother.
So when our son was finally born, I expected her to be one of the first people fighting to hold him.
Instead, she came to the hospital, walked over to the bassinet and just stared at him.
"Do you want to hold your grandson?" I asked.
She didn't answer.
"Mom?" Daniel said. "Do you want to hold him?"
Linda took a step back.
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean, no?"
"I can't look at that baby and pretend I don't know."
I couldn't understand what was happening. This was the same woman who'd spent months talking about how excited she was to meet her grandson.
"Mom, what's wrong?" Daniel asked.
"Nothing."
"Then why won't you hold him?"
"I just don't want to."
She left not long after that.
"What the hell was THAT?" I asked Daniel.
"She couldn't wait to meet him, and now she won't even touch him?"
"I don't know. Just give her some time."
"Time for WHAT?" Daniel didn't have an answer.
But things didn't get any better when we came home.
Linda still visited, brought us food and offered to help around the house. She was perfectly nice to me.
The only person she seemed to avoid was the baby.
For three weeks, she wouldn't hold him even once.
Finally, one afternoon, Linda was visiting when Daniel left the room for a few minutes. I couldn't keep pretending I wasn't bothered by it.
"Linda, what is going on?"
"What do you mean?"
"You know exactly what I mean. You couldn't wait for this baby to be born, and now you won't even hold him."
"Please, Rachel. Just leave it alone."
"No. If you have a problem with my son, I want to know what it is."
Linda looked toward the door to make sure Daniel was gone.
Then she lowered her voice.
"Either you tell my son your secret, or I will.
