Memorial Day is a solemn United States federal holiday dedicated to honoring and mourning the military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces. It is observed annually on the last Monday of May.

The Core Meaning
For the Fallen: It is specifically meant to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice—those who died in battle or from wounds sustained in war.
Difference from Veterans Day:

While Memorial Day honors the fallen, Veterans Day (observed on November 11) celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, living and deceased.

How It Is Observed
Decoration of Graves: Originally called "Decoration Day," citizens and volunteers honor the fallen by placing American flags and flowers on the gravesites at national cemeteries.

National Moment of Remembrance: Americans are encouraged to pause at 3:00 p.m. local time for a minute of silence to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by fallen service members.

Memorial Services: Parades, ceremonies, and wreath-laying events—often led by the President at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery

History

Origins: The tradition began informally in the years following the American Civil War to honor the massive loss of life. While multiple towns claimed to be the birthplace, the first widespread national observance was proclaimed on May 30, 1868.

Evolution: Originally established to commemorate only Union soldiers from the Civil War, the holiday was expanded after World War I to honor all American men and women who have died in any conflict.
