🧡 GENERAL MEMBER 🧡

You don't have to work with horses to have a place at the table.
Our General Membership is for horse owners, enthusiasts, hobbyists, and advocates who want to:

🐴 Understand their horses better
📚 Keep learning
💬 Ask better questions
🤝 Connect with knowledgeable professionals
❤️ Become a more informed advocate for their horse

So whether you have horses in your backyard, you show & compete, volunteer at a rescue or are just basically obsessed with horses this IS FOR YOU!

Better horse care doesn't happen when professionals work alone.
It happens when informed owners/advocates are part of the conversation.

❗️The Memory of the Horse ❗️
I'm not talking about obvious things: a bad fall, a race, a trailer ride, or some other difficult encounter.
🔹
I think they remember the smaller things even more so...
🔹
How pressure felt, what happened when they said "no", was slowing down an option, whether their body had a chance to recover, whether or not humans listened or asked again without waiting for a response?
🔹
Sorry to say, a horse's history doesn't disappear just because they change locations or owners.
🔹
I think we sometimes forget about the history and how that may impact the horse, BUT I'm also here to tell you it doesn't have to define the FUTURE!!
🔹
If we take a moment before we decide what a horse needs to change, it helps to understand what the horse may already be carrying forward.
🔹
This week, we focus on The Horse Remembers, and understanding the past could change the way we see the present.

❗️BRACING ISN'T ALWAYS RESISTANCE ❗️
When we feel our horse brace, we tend to think: "He's resisting me."

Have you ever thought your horse may be trying to create stability, and bracing is a familiar strategy? Or if your horse doesn't feel secure enough, for whatever reason, to let go and relax?

To clarify, this doesn't mean every brace is emotional, and it doesn't mean every brace is physical.

What it means to me is we can't put horses into neat little boxes!

Mind. Gut. Body. Environment. Training. Experience.

We cannot separate these; they're all part of the same animal. The common thread in this conversation once again.
IT'S ALL CONNECTED

🐴 The mind remembers.
🐴 The gut remembers.
🐴 The body remembers.

Next week... the piece that ties all of those together.
🐴 The Horse Remembers.

⬇️ THE BODY REMEMBERS.
We often look at a horse standing in front of us and see what is happening in the present moment.
⬇️
Forgetting the body has a history: years of repetitive movement, old injuries, uneven loading, compensation, bracing, and postural habits.
⬇️
An OTTB will carry patterns developed by hundreds of miles of repetitive work. But this isn't just an OTTB conversation.
⬇️
A barrel horse, reining horse, dressage horse, eventing horse, and any other competitive sport horse will develop patterns based on repetitive work.
⬇️
Any horse can develop patterns that become so familiar they eventually look "normal."
⬇️
I've learned over the years that one of the most valuable things we can do is learn to notice before we try to change.
⬇️
How does your horse stand when you aren't asking anything of them?
Which foot do they rest?
Do they consistently carry their head or neck one way?
Do they always feel different in one direction?
⬇️
Sometimes the first step isn't fixing. It's noticing.
⬇️
What have you noticed about your horse that makes you wonder, "Why does he/she always do that?"

If we change our focus from "How much do I need to feed my horse for them to 'look' good?"

And instead, start asking, "Does this diet support a healthy gut and a regulated nervous system?"

❗️Those are two very different conversations❗

The gut and nervous system recover together. They're often not separate problems, just different pieces of the same puzzle.

Great advice!

Great advice!

Your horse's behavior may be telling you more than you think. Tension. Spooking. Difficulty standing quietly. Constant movement.

Sometimes these aren't training problems but rather signs that the body isn't comfortable.

The gut and nervous system recover together.
It's ALL CONNECTED!
