Meet our third Avanzando Scholarship Recipient Natalie Rivera Mendez! 👏

Being awarded the SPS Plus Architects and Bristol Myers scholarships through PUFE was a turning point for this ASU senior. As a first-generation college student, she knew a degree was worth chasing — but the weight of commuting, working part-time, and covering everyday costs often felt like a lot to carry. Scholarship support helped lighten that load, covering textbooks, lab supplies, and transportation, so she could spend less energy worrying about money and more energy becoming the student and community member she wanted to be.

Now studying Speech and Hearing Science, she’s made the most of every opportunity — academically, in leadership, and in service. Through Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc., the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, and AllWalks at ASU, she’s built meaningful connections while deepening her passion for helping others. That passion is guiding her toward a future as a pediatric speech-language pathologist, giving children the tools to find their voice and feel empowered.

The confidence and resources PUFE gave her didn’t just support her college journey — they shaped who she wants to become. She hopes to pay it forward, serving the very communities that helped her along the way. 🗣️💛

Meet our second Avanzando Scholarship Recipient!

Angelina Nediyathu, Senior, University of Arizona -
For this University of Arizona student, earning a PUFE scholarship was never just about the money — it was a sign that their dreams mattered to others too. Higher education has always felt like a way to honor their family’s sacrifices and build a life rooted in purpose and service. That support made attending U of A more within reach, freeing them up to focus on growth — as a student, a leader, and a member of their community.

Now pursuing a B.S. in Applied Biotechnology with a minor in Public Health, they’re working toward a future in healthcare where science meets compassion. As a leader with the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association, they’ve built mentorship spaces where fellow students feel seen and supported. Their dedication to caring for others shows up everywhere — from serving as a NICU Care Cuddler and caregiver, to conducting research on maternal health, healthcare equity, and developmental language disorders.

With medical school on the horizon, they’re set on a career improving maternal and infant health — carrying forward the same support that helped shape their own path. 🩺💙

We’re celebrating five incredible Avanzando Scholars — students who have turned scholarship support into academic excellence, leadership, and service to their communities.

Meet our first recipient!
Kamal Asodov - Arizona State University
For this North High School senior, being awarded not one but two PUFE scholarships — the Maria Gomez Dream Scholarship and the Andrew Aranda No Place for Hate Scholarship — was more than financial support. It was proof that people believed in what they could become.

Now a junior in ASU’s business program, they’re juggling a full course load, three jobs, and two marketing internships — proof that hard work and ambition go hand in hand.

Looking ahead, they’re set on earning an MBA and building a career centered on impact — carrying forward the same generosity that helped launch their own journey. 🎓✨

Our PUFE Board kicked off the new school year with a retreat focused on one big goal: raising even more support for Phoenix Union student scholarships and teacher mini-grants!

We’re so grateful for this dedicated group of individuals who show up to plan, strategize, and champion our students and educators. Also, a big thank you to PXU Superintendent Thea Andrade and PXU CFO Adrian De Alba for taking the time to join us to make an even bigger impact!

🎓✨ What a night to celebrate! We had the honor of recognizing our incredible Class of 2026 scholarship recipients at our Annual Scholarship Reception. These bright, determined students represent the very best of Phoenix Union, and we couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of them.
