Thirty plus years ago, three Phoenix business leaders called together the region’s top business and civic leaders to address major problems facing the community. The invitation read in part “the immediate future of Phoenix may depend upon the response of business leadership to the challenge.” All forty individuals invited to the meeting attended. AZ business leaders back $2M literacy investment to strengthen future workforce - Phoenix Business Journal 05/11/2026

Third-grade reading proficiency is one of the most reliable predictors of future workforce readiness — yet only 36% of Arizona's third-graders passed the most recent state reading assessment.

GPL members Sharon Harper, Chairman & CEO of Plaza Companies, and John Graham, Chairman & CEO of Sunbelt Holdings, have authored a timely op-ed in the Phoenix Business Journal making the case for Arizona's proposed $2 million investment in literacy coaching as part of the Arizona Literacy Plan 2030.

As they put it: literacy is not simply an education issue — it's an economic imperative. Arizona cannot build a top-tier workforce on a weak foundation in reading, and this targeted investment represents the kind of pragmatic, data-informed leadership our state needs.

We're grateful to Governor Katie Hobbs for speaking with GPL members at our first general membership meeting of 2026.

GPL members heard valuable insights from the Governor on her recent State of the State address and engaged in meaningful dialogue about her administration's key policy priorities for the 2026 legislative session.

The conversation reinforced GPL's commitment to working alongside leadership from across the state to advance solutions that strengthen our region and create opportunity for all Arizonans.

We applaud Governor Katie Hobbs' State of the State address and her announcement of the Housing Acceleration Fund—a critical step toward expanding affordable housing across Arizona.

Innovative financing tools like this are essential to attracting capital and accelerating development in the communities that need it most. At Greater Phoenix Leadership, we know that public-private partnerships drive real results and lasting impact.

This is meaningful progress for Arizona's housing ecosystem, and we're committed to supporting solutions that ensure every Arizonan has access to safe, affordable housing.

"That’s why, today, I am announcing a new Housing Acceleration Fund to build more affordable housing, faster. The fund leverages public and private dollars to unlock lower cost financing and multiply the affordable homes we build. For every dollar we invest, we’ll generate up to ten dollars to finance projects that house Arizonans." (from Governor Katie Hobbs State of the State Address on 1/12/26)

GPL is excited to support AZ's new State 48 Graduate Profile, helping shape a shared vision that ensures Arizona students are workforce ready and set up for long-term success. Together, we’re aligning education with opportunity and building pathways that prepare students not just to graduate, but to thrive.

Rather than focusing solely on seat time and credits earned, the State 48 Graduate Profile defines what readiness for the real world truly means—one shaped by rapid economic change, emerging technologies, and evolving workforce demands. It asks a simple but powerful question: What should a graduate actually be prepared to do the day after graduation?

At its core are four futures every Arizona graduate should be ready to pursue—enrollment, employment, enlistment & service, and entrepreneurship—supported by eight essential competencies that blend academic knowledge, durable human skills, and digital fluency to help students remain adaptable and future-ready.
