The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office celebrated Jim Mason on his 90th birthday.
Jim has dedicated more than 54 years of his life to the Sheriff’s Office, retiring as a sworn Lieutenant with badge number S76. Following his retirement, Jim continued serving through Search and Rescue, K9, and local community events. He also serves as Commander of the High Desert Search and Rescue posse.

His decades of service reflect an enduring commitment to this agency and the community he has served throughout his life.

To honor this incredible milestone, a special drive by birthday parade and radio message were arranged to celebrate Jim and recognize his remarkable legacy.

Happy 90th birthday, Jim! Thank you for more than five decades of dedication, service, and commitment to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and our community.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office recognized our dedicated team of Jail Volunteers during the Jail Volunteers Award Ceremony, honoring their years of service and commitment to helping incarcerated individuals build a better future.

Through their time, guidance, and support, these volunteers help individuals pursue a fresh start, make positive changes, and create a new direction for their lives.

MCSO recognizes the vital role these volunteers play in supporting rehabilitation and reducing recidivism. We are grateful for their continued dedication and the lasting impact they make in our jail community.

MASH Minute: Meet Penny and Nicole!

This week, MCSO Undersheriff Jeff Gentry is featuring Penny and Nicole for our weekly Monday Mash Minute , who arrived at the MCSO MASH Unit following a recent animal neglect case in which they suffered from malnutrition and dehydration due to a lack of proper food and water.

Since then, they have made tremendous progress and are now healthy, friendly, energetic, and ready for a forever home. They share a wonderful bond, and we hope to see them adopted together!

Today, we remember Deputy Juan "Johnny" Ruiz, who died in the line of duty on October 11, 2021, after sustaining critical injuries during an assault by a suspect in custody at the District 2 substation in Avondale.

As he removed the handcuffs to place the suspect in a holding cell, the suspect suddenly attacked him. A violent struggle ensued, and Deputy Ruiz lost consciousness during the fight while attempting to use his radio to call for help. Other deputies quickly located him in the holding cell and transported him to a local hospital. The suspect fled the area but was later apprehended, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to life in prison.

Deputy Ruiz never regained consciousness and remained on life support so his organs could be donated. He had served with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for three years. His bravery, dedication, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today, we remember Deputy Gary Labenz, who died in the line of duty after suffering a fatal heart attack on October 10, 2005, while returning home from Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

During his assignment in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Deputy Labenz and his team rescued more than 100 people and recovered over 50 victims. After completing their mission, the team stopped in San Antonio for the night, where Deputy Labenz tragically passed away.

Deputy Labenz served with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for 19 years. He is survived by his wife and four children and is remembered for his courage, compassion, and dedication to helping others.

Sheriff Jerry Sheridan was in attendance to recognize Lt. Graffious and thank him for his years of commitment, professionalism, and sacrifice. His contributions to MCSO are appreciated, and his service has made a lasting impact on this organization.

We hosted the Arizona Tactical Officers Association’s quarterly negotiation training for negotiators from across the state. Our Crisis and Hostage Negotiations team presented on a call out that happened in Sun City last year that ended peacefully due to negotiations and SWAT collaboration. Other presentations outlined topics from trauma, negotiating with personality disorders and resiliency in the realm of Negotiations.

MCLETA Detention Class 1002 has begun its journey to become detention deputies with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Since day one, these recruits have been challenged through rigorous training designed to prepare them for the responsibilities of serving in a detention environment.

MCLETA is one of Arizona’s premier law enforcement academies, and we strive to set the highest standards for those who choose to serve.

Our Kodiak 900 is built to go the distance, giving our Extraditions Unit the ability to travel across the country and safely bring out-of-state prisoners back to Arizona to face the charges they’re wanted for.

Sheriff Jerry Sheridan and the City of Fountain Hills recently recognized the outstanding work of MCSO District 7 deputies for their continued commitment to public safety and service to the Fountain Hills community.

Over the past year, through a strong collaboration between the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Fountain Hills, MCSO presence and patrols have increased, traffic enforcement efforts have expanded, and recent filings with the City Court have increased by well over 100 percent.

These significant increases reflect the dedication of District 7 deputies to proactive policing, thorough investigations, traffic safety, and maintaining a strong law enforcement presence throughout the community.

The partnership between MCSO and the Town of Fountain Hills demonstrates what can be accomplished when law enforcement and local government work together toward a common goal, enhancing public safety and strengthening the community.

Sheriff Jerry Sheridan extends his appreciation to the men and women of District 7 for their professionalism, dedication, and outstanding service to the citizens of Fountain Hills.
