"Under the leadership of Nicholas Ashton, Ph.D., senior director of the Fluid Biomarker Program at Banner Sun Health Research Institute, an international collaborative effort has achieved remarkable results that exemplify the transformative power of sustained philanthropic investment in Alzheimer's research.

The DROP-AD project, conducted across seven European medical centers, successfully tested 337 participants and proved that finger-prick blood collection can accurately measure key markers of Alzheimer's pathology and brain damage. This breakthrough enables worldwide research participation by eliminating the logistical constraints that have historically limited biomarker studies to well-resourced medical facilities."

The Arizona ADRC advances Alzheimer’s and related dementias research by inspiring future scientists through programs that engage early-career researchers, introduce high school students to lab science and conferences, and spark curiosity in younger students with hands-on activities.

"The Junior Fellows are then invited to attend the Arizona Alzheimer's Consortium Scientific Conference where they are able to put their skills to the test by interacting with presenters and learning even more about aging science. Heather Bimonte-Nelson says she hears from students almost immediately about how excited they are to put their newly honed skills and confidence to the test."

Midwestern University Researcher Featured on 12News for Innovative Art Therapy Study

Dr. Tiffany Hughes, one of this year’s AAC grant recipients from Midwestern University, was recently featured on 12 News alongside two of her collaborators. Her funded project, “The Opening Minds through Art Program with Unhoused Older Adults: An Implementation Pilot Study,” is making a meaningful impact at The Haven—part of Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS)—a temporary shelter serving unhoused seniors.

This pilot study explores the benefits of art therapy for older adults living with dementia while also providing healthcare students with valuable training to better understand and support the unique needs of this population.
