Play the Glad Game 09/18/2021

My grandmother, Minnie Randall, is a marvelous model for me. Since my early childhood, my grandmother’s kindly words of counsel have shaped my response to life’s ups and downs. When I became discouraged or upset over the loss of a puppy or frustration with following a recipe, she said ‘play the glad game and find something good in your situation.’...

Millennials & Me 02/10/2021

So much chatter about millennials in media, with HR managers and also, friends who employ millennials in their offices. I listen to complaints the millennials have been over nurtured and coddled by helicopter parents plus, the millennials seem to be overconfident and arrogant about their own abilities and achievements. Looking back 50 years, was I guilty of being overconfident and arrogant about my own abilities and achievements? ...

Entertaining vs Hospitality 02/06/2021

Entertaining: providing amusement or enjoyment. Hospitality: the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. For me, entertaining is picture perfect Martha Stewart Living magazine. Entertaining is a photo captured and posted on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter While hospitality is warm gracious enjoyment in someone’s home for coffee, a snack or a meal. Early in our marriage, a couple invited us for dinner, and we enjoyed a lovely evening. ...

It’s February, What Are We Doing Now? 02/03/2021

Christmas and Thanksgiving are pletera opportunities to volunteer with non-profits and charitable organizations. Volunteer sign-ups are jammed with names eager to help and serve meals and participate in service activities. So many sign-ups are ‘over sold’ and then there are people who just show-up as volunteers with no advance notice…just show up to help. New unwrapped toys, bags filled with can goods, donated clothes and frozen turkeys are generously given to the Salvation Army and similar organizations....

God Talk vs Small Talk 01/30/2021

How many words do we say in an average day? Flippantly, I’ve commented that my husband has 500 words per day while I average about 5,000 words Recently, I was curious as to the real truth of my comments and googled average words spoken in a day- discovering my flippant comment was considerably off by some university and research organizations....

Hazardous to Your Health 01/27/2021

How many friends and or family do you know personally that have an adverse reaction to peanuts, wheat, or dairy? Maybe an airplane posts a sign “peanut free zone” or a restaurant menu marking with an asterisk all the ‘gluten free’ offerings or ‘dairy free ‘recipes while more and more public buildings plus hotels with ‘no smoking’ symbols on the back of each and every door....

Pillow under the Bed? 01/11/2021

Years and years ago, our son, Wally, jr. graduated from law school so after the graduation ceremony and festivities, our family pitched in together with cleaning out the room in his school apartment, preparing for his move out to his first adult apartment. My responsibility was dusting and mopping the floor. I moved the mop around the room and swiped underneath the bed. ...

Don’t Die on That Hill 01/04/2021

April 15, annually-the IRS day of judgment on our bank accounts, IRA’s and 401Ks. April 15, 2019-the day Notre Dame fire damaged the great cathedral in Paris, France. April 15, 2020-the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the global community. In the Corona Virus era, April 15 was the day on the calendar when we could give up on our daily realities. Realities: such as the ever-present pile of dirty clothes....

Leave the Light On 01/04/2021

Remember the ‘We’ll Leave the Light on’ commercial of a national motel chain with spokesman Tom Bodett? His reassuring voice informed us all that no matter the day or the time, that motel chain would have their light on to welcome guests, check them into a room and provide the rest from their travels and adventures. We’ll leave the light on became a familiar quote we even said to friends and family as a gesture of warm hospitality and friendliness....

The Lord Put a Ribbon on It 12/28/2020

The father had three daughters with cerebral palsy…not one, not two, but three daughters with abnormal brain development, exaggerated reflexes, and involuntary body motions. I sat beside this dad during a retreat dinner amazed with his demeanor and attitude. After chatting about life and current politics events, I ventured down an extremely personal inquiry with a question “after one child with cerebral palsy, I can understand you and your wife wanted another child and took the probability of having a normal, healthy baby....

Foot Washing for My Soul 12/14/2020

Foot-washing began as a religious tradition when Jesus start washed the feet of his disciples before the Passover Meal before His crucifixion. Peter objected to Jesus washing his feet since servants or slaves usually washed the guests’ feet in a home before a meal. This foot-washing custom continues in some denominations today, preformed weekly, monthly or annually. Foot-washing has not been a tradition in my religious training....

How We Began

A mother knows when something is amiss. When my eldest son, Wally Jr., started his Freshman year of high school I sensed God was not at the center of his life. He was Harvard-bound, a generally good kid, but spiritually his life was not centered on the Rock. So I nudged, actually forced, Wally to serve with Teen Missions that summer. Soon after, we decided to serve on short-term mission projects as a family.

In 1997, we founded the Micah Global Foundation. Our projects include legal conferences in Afghanistan, teaching kids in the shanties of Cape Town and finishing cement floors in Zimbabwe.

Currently, we organize volunteers here in Arizona, Ohio, New York City and elsewhere to volunteer with The Salvation Army and other nonprofits doing Gospel-centered work.
