Did you know that Thunderbird used to host a hot air balloon race? Beginning in 1975 to the early 2000s, the school hosted a balloon race on the Glendale campus. Proceeds from the race helped fund student scholarships. We have a beautiful online exhibit of balloon race items on the Arizona Memory Project site and we recently added 61 new items donated by Tbird alum, Jay Heiser '85.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Art Peterson, Thunderbird President from 1966-1969. Dr. Peterson was a big fan of the School's history and kept in touch with our Archivist when he visited campus, which was often. Most recently he attended the 75th Anniversary event at the Global Headquarters Building in downtown Phoenix. We send special condolences to his family.

The Thunderbird archivist recently worked with a documentary film crew to explore the history of Chinese cadets who trained at Thunderbird Field No. 1 during World War II. In addition to providing access to archival images and other materials, the archivist was interviewed to speak about the historical background. On this date in 1975, the school held its first annual Thunderbird Balloon Race. Initially, the race was organized as a fundraiser for student scholarships. Over the years, the event grew in size and popularity and is fondly remembered by alumni and community members alike.
