Some bonds form in the hardest moments. That's what happened more than ten years ago when a Phoenix Fire Department firefighter met eight-year-old Matthew at Phoenix Children's. Matthew was fighting an aggressive cancer and mentioned he wanted to meet a police officer. That firefighter made a call to his friend, Phoenix PD Lt. Douglas Opferbeck. Lt. Opferbeck began visiting Matthew multiple times a week for nearly 10 months.
Their connection didn't end when Matthew left the hospital. They stayed in touch, and when Lt. Opferbeck was recently promoted to Commander, Matthew and his family proudly attended his pinning ceremony!
Even small moments of kindness can have a lasting impact. ππ
