We are pleased to announce that Artist Daniel Mayer has been commissioned to create public art on bridge fencing for The Grand-35 Project.
This project is led by Arizona Department of Transportation, in collaboration with Maricopa Association of Governments, City of Phoenix Streets Department, and The City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture.
About the Artist - Daniel Mayer is an Arizona artist/educator who investigates the intersection of language and art resulting in artist’s books, experimental letterpress printmaking, and gateway public art. Mayer’s public art commissions include PHX Sky Train’s glass murals, terrazzo, and bridgework at Happy Valley Rd. and I-17. Mayer exhibits nationally and internationally and has work in numerous private and public collections.

Join us on Friday, May 8, 2026 at 9:00 am to celebrate the people, organizations, and public leaders who shape Arizona’s creative future, building on more than 40 years of statewide recognition through the Governor’s Arts Awards.
This celebration is happening at the Musical Instrument Museum in north Phoenix at 4725 E. Mayo Blvd, Phoenix AZ 85050, just south of the 101 and Tatum.
Since 1981, the Governor’s Arts Awards have stood as Arizona’s flagship statewide honor for artists, arts organizations, businesses, educators, and advocates whose passion and creativity shape our cultural landscape.
Awards to be presented on May 8 include The Shelley Award, the Oonagh Award and The Governor's Award.
The Shelley Award is being presented to Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, the Vice President for Cultural Affairs at Arizona State University and Executive Director of ASU Gammage.
Governor Hobbs has personally selected the recipient of The Governor's Award which is being presented to Theatrikos, a Flagstaff based theatre with a commitment to inclusive, community-centered programming and high-quality live theatre.
The Oonagh Award recognizes collaboration in the arts and culture community and the honoree will be announced at the May 8 event. The four finalists for the Oonagh Award are:
- Creative Flagstaff (Julie Comnick)
- Love Where You Live (Thea Wilshire)
- Patagonia Creative Arts Association (Cassina Farley)
- Warrior Songs (Jason Moon)

Commonly known as the "Valley of the Sun", Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the United States and provides a rich culture and an abundance of attractions for both residents and visitors from museums, nature parks, and restaurants to a vast network of arts, entertainment, sports, recreational and educational amenities.
With an award-winning public arts program, the city is looking for their next Director to oversee the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, the City's designated local arts agency. The department offers various opportunities, including funding and professional development, as well as supporting the work of arts organizations, artists and educators who provide quality arts programming, activities, and experiences to the Phoenix community.
The ideal candidate will have a vision to reimagine the Phoenix of tomorrow and for what is possible in the arts space. This big picture thinker shall be focused on enriching the lives of the residents, businesses and visitors through the local arts, culture, and education in the Phoenix. Candidates must have proven experience and transferable skills to drive forward the cultural art bond projects, effectively navigate engagement with artists, philanthropists, patrons, public art contractors/vendors, community stakeholders, Commissioners, and elected officials, along with the ability to build consensus to solve public-facing issues.
Candidates shall have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in arts/arts education, business administration or a directly related field, and a minimum of five (5) years supervisory management experience with a local, state or national agency, non-profit or foundation in the arts field (such as music, theater, dance, visual/digital arts) or arts-related program in education. A master's degree is preferred in a similar concentration.

Anna Flores | Artist Bio
Anna Flores is an ASU MFA graduate and 2025 Frontier OPEN Poetry Award recipient. She has work in The Nation, Columbia Journal, Huizache, and more. Her film Border Dweller Love screened nationally. She teaches at Estrella Mountain Community College and leads community workshops in Phoenix and Nogales.
