So grateful to the Pat Tillman Memorial VFW Post 40 Avondale, AZ not only for their service to our country, but for choosing to spend their Day of Service at Steele Indian School Park yesterday! The group supported event setup within Memorial Hall, planted vegetation, and engaged in a park cleanup. ❤️🤍💙

In honor of Volunteer Month, we’re celebrating City employees who began their journey as volunteers!
Meet Chris Webb, who started as a dedicated Park Steward and is now a proud Park Ranger. Chris spent years volunteering alongside Park Rangers—maintaining trails, keeping preserves clean and safe, and representing the Natural Resources Division at community events.
Inspired by her love of hiking and a desire to give back, Chris found fulfillment in supporting the preserves she enjoyed. Although she never expected to become a Park Ranger, her volunteer work opened the door to a career she loves.
Today, Chris continues to apply the skills, insight, and passion she gained as a volunteer—especially when helping guide new volunteers on their own paths of service. For her, the most rewarding part has always been the appreciation from the community and knowing she’s making a difference.
Her advice for anyone thinking about volunteering with the City:
Show professionalism, work hard, treat everyone with respect, and—most importantly—just go for it. Giving back might lead you somewhere inspiring.

In honor of Volunteer Month, we’re celebrating City employees who began their journey as volunteers!
Meet Richard Rowe, who first served as a Park Steward with our Park Rangers. Volunteering helped him explore the Ranger career path, build meaningful connections with Parks and Recreation staff, and learn hands-on skills that still guide him today.
His favorite part? Seeing the impact—finishing projects that made our parks more beautiful and knowing he helped the community.
Richard’s advice for future volunteers: Give it a try! It’s a great way to learn the job, build confidence, and take that next step toward a career with the City of Phoenix.
