📖 Early identification can change a student’s reading trajectory.

Ohio’s reading diagnostics help educators identify students who are on track and those who may need additional support. But assessment is only the beginning. The greatest impact comes when schools use that information to take meaningful action:

✅ Identify specific skill needs
✅ Develop meaningful Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plans
✅ Provide targeted, evidence-based intervention
✅ Monitor progress frequently
✅ Adjust instruction when students are not responding

Every data point should lead to a thoughtful instructional response.

During National Literacy Month, let’s recommit to ensuring that no struggling reader becomes an invisible reader. Every student deserves the support and instruction they need to become a confident reader. 📚

📚 September is National Literacy Month!

Across Ohio, schools are strengthening literacy instruction through practices grounded in the Science of Reading. This means providing students with explicit, systematic instruction while intentionally developing key skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, oral language, and writing.

The goal is bigger than adopting a new program. Lasting improvement requires strong instructional leadership, knowledgeable educators, high-quality instructional materials, purposeful professional learning, and ongoing support for effective implementation.

Charter School Specialists is proud to partner with Ohio community schools as they turn literacy research into meaningful classroom practice and help ensure students have the foundational skills they need to thrive.

Explore Ohio’s literacy priorities and resources:

In 2023, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine launched the ReadOhio initiative, a statewide effort to raise literacy achievement. State agencies and partner organizations are collaborating to anchor supports for families, educators, leaders, and community partners in the science of reading.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost and forever changed by the events of September 11, 2001.

As we mark the 25th anniversary, we honor the courage, sacrifice, compassion, and resilience demonstrated by so many in the days that followed.

Charter School Specialists President Rod Hale shares a reflection as we take a moment to remember those we lost and honor the many whose lives were forever changed.

We are grateful to serve alongside our schools and partners and to continue strengthening the communities we are privileged to be a part of.
