Last night was a special evening for the Piedmont Police Department at the City Council meeting.

Chief Frederick Shavies II introduced our new Support Services Commander Jodi Cornell, who brings 21 years of law enforcement experience and a wealth of leadership and operational expertise to PPD.

Chief Shavies also recognized Sergeant Kristina Foster on her well-earned promotion. Sergeant Foster began her sworn career with PPD and returned to our department in 2025, quickly distinguishing herself through her leadership, professionalism, and commitment to our community.

The evening also gave us the opportunity to recognize Commander Lisa Douglas for an extraordinary 28 years of service to the Piedmont Police Department and 38 years in law enforcement. Even after retiring, Commander Douglas answered the call to return when PPD needed her leadership and experience. Her dedication and lasting contributions have helped shape our department, and we are incredibly grateful for her many years of service.

Please join us in welcoming Commander Cornell, congratulating Sergeant Foster, and thanking Commander Douglas as she once again returns to a very well-deserved retirement!

FOLLOW-UP INVESTIGATION LEADS TO ARREST & SEIZURE

In August, Sgt. Foster conducted a traffic stop that led to the discovery of two fi****ms concealed inside the vehicle’s engine compartment and the arrest of a suspect.

But the investigation didn’t stop there.

Through continued follow-up and diligent investigative work by Sgt. Foster and members of the Piedmont Police Department, additional information was developed that led to a subsequent arrest and the service of a search warrant at the suspect’s residence.

With the assistance of the Oakland Police Department and California Highway Patrol Air Unit, the search warrant was safely executed and resulted in the seizure of the illegally possessed items pictured in this post.

The suspect was taken into custody and booked at Santa Rita Jail without incident.

This case is a great example of the work that continues long after an initial arrest — following leads, developing information, and working collaboratively with our law enforcement partners to keep our communities safe.

We extend our thanks to OPD and CHP for their assistance and partnership.

Great work, Sgt. Foster and team!

On August 16, 2026, Piedmont Police officers began investigating multiple auto burglaries that occurred during the early morning hours. Preliminary information indicated that a similar suspect vehicle may have been associated with several of the incidents.

At approximately 5:56 a.m., Sgt. Foster conducted a traffic stop on a similar vehicle in the area where the burglaries had occurred. During the stop, Sgt. Foster conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and located two fi****ms concealed inside the engine compartment.

The driver, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing fi****ms, was arrested and booked at Santa Rita Jail on multiple felony charges.

This arrest highlights the importance of effective preliminary investigations and proactive police work.

The Piedmont Police Department remains committed to protecting our community.

The auto burglary investigations remain ongoing.

We made some changes to traffic circulation in the Civic Center over the summer.

As we prepare for the start of school on Monday, Chief Shavies asks everyone traveling through the area to familiarize yourself with the changes, review routes, and allow extra travel time next week as families adjust to the transition.
